From Refugee to Entrepreneur: With a Micro-loan

By Bukenya Muusa | Project Leader

Jenifer Currying her business
Jenifer Currying her business

Through your support, Jeniffer received the financial boost needed to turn things around!

When Jenifer fled Sudan with her 25-month-old baby, she carried nothing but the hope of finding safety. The civil war had taken everything her home, her family, and her sense of security. Arriving in Uganda as a refugee, she faced the harsh reality of starting over in an unfamiliar land with no source of income and a child depending on her.

Life in the refugee camp was a daily struggle. Food was scarce, and Jenifer constantly worried about how she would provide for her child. But through support from VACNET’s microloan program, she received the financial boost she needed to turn things around. With a small loan, she expanded her vegetable garden, purchased better seeds, and invested in farming tools.

At first, the garden was just a means of feeding her child nutritious meals. But with her growing confidence and newfound resources, she started producing more than she needed. Selling the surplus to other refugees allowed her to generate an income, buy other necessities, and slowly rebuild her life.

Today, Jenifer is not just feeding her baby she’s empowering other refugee women to do the same. She trains fellow mothers on how to start their own small gardens, helping them secure food for their families and earn a living. What began as a desperate attempt to survive has now become a thriving, sustainable livelihood.

You Can Help More Women Like Jenifer!

Jenifer’s story is one of resilience, but she could not have done it alone. With your support, VACNET can provide more women with the microloans and training they need to lift themselves out of poverty. Donate today and partner with us to make a lasting impact in the lives of refugee women and their families.
