Betina, a 41-year-old woman, embarked on a remarkable journey from struggling to feed her family to becoming a beacon of empowerment in her community, thanks to the VACNET program. Faced with the challenges of limited access to farmland due to societal norms denying women their rightful ownership, Alice, along with her fellow villagers, seized the opportunity presented by VACNET.
Upon the program's arrival, a group was formed, and they were not just given financial support but also received valuable training. With an agro loan of $840, the group invested in farming, opening 2 acres of land initially and planting Simsim. The resources provided by VACNET became the catalyst for positive change, enabling them to expand their farm to an impressive 6 acres.
Taking their success further, the group established a store in Alero trading center, strategically positioning themselves to supply larger markets. The impact of this transformation reached every aspect of their lives – ensuring enough food for all five families, enabling the education of their children, and attending to various other needs.
In a testament to their newfound capabilities, the group, including Betina, invested in a hand-driven tractor for the upcoming season. This visionary move is set to allow them to plow at least 10 acres, expanding their capacity to supply the growing market in neighboring South Sudan But also will allow them the opportunity to hire the tractor to fellow famers generating more income for the group while expanding food production.
Beyond their own community, Betina's group has extended their impact by supplying simsim and ground nuts to a refugee camp in Adguman. No longer beggars, they proudly stand as suppliers, showcasing the tangible and lasting impact of women's empowerment. The gratitude expressed for VACNET's agro support echoes not just as words but as a testament to the transformative power of empowering women – changing not just individual lives but entire communities.
Long live VACNET for being a catalyst for positive change.
