Margarita
Margarita

Hello, my name is  Margarita, and I am in my last year of high school.

Looking back on my life I am surprised with all that I have achieved. It is hard to believe that what once was a blurred, sad, and hopeless vision, with very few options available in the first years of my life, is now a present and future with hope, excitement, and great expectations.

Even when I started to have positive changes in my life, I have to admit that it was very hard to perceive myself as a person who was on the right track; one which would lead me to all the things I was hoping for.

More importantly, I realize that I am not alone in this journey. The effort has not only been mine but has been shared with all the people in my life who have believed in me and taught me to value and appreciate my studies, discipline, and hard work. Consequently, I am about to begin my college degree.

My studies have been supported the last two years with your generosity through GlobalGiving.org, and for this I am grateful!

In this stage of my life I am aware that it is essential to have an academic degree, to continue my personal development and realize my full potential.

Puerta Abierta has the opportunity to receive funds today December the 3rd that will be matched at 100% by Giving Tuesday! Today is a great opportunity to fund this new stage of my life and head towards my independent life

Margarita’s story is one of the many in Puerta Abierta which are heading towards a world of opportunities. A life that seemed sad, dark and doomed to fail, today seems filled with optimism and unlimited opportunities.

We invite you today from 12:00 pm until December 4th 11:59 am to donate through Giving Tuesday campaign and feel proud to be part of these girls’ transformation into women who are educated, grateful, willing to give of themselves and all of what they have learned to the continuing growth and development of their “family”.

It is important to recognize the day-to-day effort these young women have exerted to fulfill their responsibilities. The support, trust and continued help offered by Global Giving, however, has been priceless in the girls’ ability to follow and realize their dreams. For this, we at Puerta Abierta, will be forever grateful.

A simple “thank you” seems to fall far short of how we feel. It captures, nevertheless, our appreciation for all the changes that have taken place in Puerta Abierta as a consequence of all the help received from Global Giving.

Our success is for all and by all.

In a home where 9 girls live, there is always an interesting story to tell. This time, we would like to share an experience which has made us feel quite proud.

Mercedes, who has never failed to surprise us, has once again given us a pleasant surprise. She finally finished the equivalent of her Junior High School program, and is now continuing with her High School studies. She is taking totally new courses for which she had no previous training. With academic help, guidance at home, and considerable self-motivation, she was able to pass satisfactorily her first monthly evaluation.

Once again this experience has reinforced the belief that personal motivation and dedication can compensate for any deficits or disabilities in order to overcome any obstacles in life. In our role as Mercedes’s family we will continue to work to help her maintain this resolve to succeed and continue to confront any new challenge with which she is faced

Congratulations Mercedes.

Dear Donor

It has been more than a year since we started the joint Project between Puerta Abierta and Global Giving.  We would like to thank the generosity of all the individuals who have believed  in the development and progress of these 9 young ladies living in Puerta Abierta.

We are sure that this year´s achievement has left an important imprint both in the girls as well as in each one of you.

We are aware that an educational project cannot be finished in one year. Education is a multi-faceted phenomenon, one that is continual and never-ending.  With the support, work and generosity of many individuals, like you, we will continue to invest in the future of the girls of Puerta Abierta.

As a consequence of the benevolence and kindness of the people who visit Global Giving web-site, and its fund-raising program, we have been able to continue for an additional five months and finally we have fully funded this project.

Once again, we would like to thank you all for your faith in and support of our program at Puerta Abierta.

You can review the progress of the academic performance of the 9 girls in the “Evaluation of the Academic Year 2012- 2013“. We are pleased to see they did a very good job and we will keep them motivated to keep on.

We will be posting a new project soon in order to build the home for them, we are very exited as we will finally have our own home!  We will be in touch soon! Meanwhile if you want to keep on with your donation we invite you to visit us at www.puertaabierta.org or write an email to puertaabierta.connie@gmail.com, be confident that your donation as all the exeeding funds will be used only for the education program of the 9 girls.

We will always value your generosity,

Puerta Abierta IAP

Our girls
Our girls

One of the major objectives of Puerta Abierta is for these young women to learn to give, to be generous, and be willing to assist others in most need of help in any number of ways.

Our residents joined a group of families who are dedicated to help poverty-level communities, in which there are a wide-range of needs. This group offers conferences and a variety of activities. The young women from Puerta Abierta cooperate by playing with the young children or interacting with a group of young adults, playing basketball or conversing with the family members.

We believe that giving to others is not a question of how much you have. It dependes more so on your willingness to give of yourself. Our residents are grateful young women and are quite cognizant of how much they can offer to others. This experience has enriched their lives and we hope that it will become a positive experience for their future.

Within the Mexican culture, turning 15 years old is a very significant moment for all young girls because it symbolizes the transition from being a girl to becoming a woman. The Mexican version of Sweet 16 in the US is the "Quinceañera", where all newly arrived 15 year olds are introduced into society. In the past two months, two of Puerta Abierta's girls turned 15.
Puerta Abierta family is currently planning a party for our "quinceañeras"  and will enjoy watching them with their friends celebrate and have fun in this is once-in-a-life-time experience. However this symbolic celebration doesn't mean both of these 15 year old girls don't need you, they need your donations to keep up with their academic education in order to become independent and self sufficient.
According to Mexico's law, in 3 more years at 18 they will be considered legal adults nevertheless they are not ready to be out by themselves in the world and the Puerta Abierta family aimes to provide them a chance to be part of this family until the day they can go out in the world and fend for themselves. Thanks to your ongoing donations these girls will continue making their best effort with the opportunities you are giving them.
Thank you for allowing them to have a second chance !
