Project Report | Jul 19, 2016
Provide education in ethics and sustainability

By Randolph Brown | Secretary

Our project "Provide education in ethics and sustainability" had the following key activities in Q2/2016:

  • Philobrunch* #5 with with Dr. Andreas Belwe.

The topic was "Plato and the Good Life - Ethical Behavior in a Digital World". Within the Philobrunch format, the participants had a lively discussion about the ethical challenges and conflicts that digitalization poses on our daily lives.

  • PhiloBrunch* #6 with Ms. Prof. Dr. Steindorff-Classen.

The topic was "KonTEXT - how reading sessions can help support juvenile delinquents“ on May 21, 2016

Prof. Dr. Steindorff-Classen presented KonTEXT, a project devised by students of the Munich University of Applied Sciences where the students support juveniles who are "sentenced" by youth courts to reading sessions for pedagogic reasons. The task of the students is to organize group reading sessions with the goal of helping the delinquents develop a passion for reading. Reading material is carefully selected by the students in order to generate discussion and introspection.

The discussion of this very hands-on social project touched many topics, such as ethics in juvenile justice, social responsibility, philanthropy and the associated ethical conflicts.

Outlook for the period July 1st until September 30th, 2016

  • Workshop on practical ethics, title: "Dealing with daily conflicts - self-knowledge and strategies" on July 20th, 2016

This half-day Workshop will be moderated by Christian Strobl and conducted in cooperation with the Munich University of Applied Sciences. Participants will discuss nature and root cause of inner and outer conflicts, typical dilemnas, as well as possible counter-strategies.

  • Philobrunch* #7 with the title "Medicine and Music“. Exact date not yet set.

* Description of "Philobrunch"

Ethica Rationalis' Philobrunch (Philosophical Brunch) is a forum for sharing thoughts about ethics and sustainability among like-minded people. In small groups, questions all around ethics and sustainability are discussed in an intimate and relaxed brunch setting.
