Another life saving interventions with "MaMaH"

Oak Rural Health Organization continues to make impact on grassroots lives, especially the children and women who are the main target of this project, to reduce the burden of malaria, malnutrition and hypertensio(MaMaH). Religion centres within our targeted locations were toured as planned and eligible children were given vitamin supplements and anti worm tablets(Albendazole). This activity is still on going as it is expected to take place quarterly.

Village health outreach and mobile clinic, which is a major event in this project ensured healthcare activities are taken to the doorstep of the grassroots members. The entire people of Igbooloyin community could not hold their joy as they benefited from the most recent session of the program which came up on 4th May 2019. Provision of free health care to all the people was the strategy used to enhance massive turnout of the villagers, both children and adults. No fewer than 350 villagers of which more than 80% were women and children, benefited from the program. Majority of the children tested positive for malaria parasite and were treated. Also, about 20 among the children presented with a very severe condition which warranted emergency care(also tested positive for malaria parasite), were treated. New case of hypertension among the women were diagnosed and treatment commenced. Health talks, medical diagnostic tests using rapid test kits, health assessments, counselling, drug dispensing etc, were major activities of the day.

Malaria, malnutrition and hypertension remains a burden and threats to productive living of the grassroots dwellers. Oak Rural Health Organization is prepared to implement more action to tackle the menace. We have been able to achieve greatly with just 17% of our funding goal. While appreciating the kind gestures of our donors and supporters, we still have a long way to go in meeting up with the project goals. Reaching our funding goal of a little above $30,000 will enable us implement other aspects of the project plans which are still pending. We love to do more, we wish to reach more of the unreached grassroots dwellers to prevent mortality and improve live quality.

Saving lives in the grassroots with project"MaMaH"

As part of her commitment to delivering a healthy living to rural lives in Nigeria. Oak Rural Health Organization took a grand styled mobile clinic to the villagers of Melemuku village of Akinyele local government of Oyo state Nigeria, a hard to reach village in Ibadan. Access to “QUALITY” health care, portable water and sanitation facilities was their major challenge. The village health outreach and mobile clinic was one of our steps in implementing our project “end malaria, malnutrition, save a child in Nigeria”. Branded “PROJECT MaMaH,” with the goal of reducing the burden of malaria, malnutrition in grassroots children and early diagnosis of hypertension in adults.
Prior to the village health outreach event, series of community advocacy visits took place. This ensured the village elders and relevant stakeholders in the community were enlightened about the project. Different groups in the village were assigned roles to play in order to ensure a massive turn out. Three hundred and twenty four(324) villagers from Melemuku village and people from up to ten(10) other adjoining villages came out to access free health services, which include health education and sensitization, health counseling, health assessment, doctors’ consultation, rapid medical laboratory testing; free drugs were also dispensed. Special care given to targeted children include giving of anti worm pills, vitamin A supplements, assessment for malaria, testing and treatment, nutritional assessment etc. Pregnant women in attendance were also giving special vitamin supplements to enhance good growth and development of the fetus and general wellbeing of the woman in pregnancy. The activity ensured no one was left behind as everyone was actively engaged.
Moreover, the impact of the program outcome was huge. This project provided many villagers with an access to Doctors and other healthcare professionals’ services for the first time in their lives, or in a very long period. This has prevented needless mortality in adults and specifically; children. Over 40 children age 0-5 years tested positive for malaria were effectively treated. This project has achieved so much with less than $6,000 raised(on globalgiving and other offline sources) out of our $30,000 funding goal. The economically disadvantaged people in the grassroots need more of these helping hands in combating these major threats to their health. Our fundraising for the project is still ongoing. END MALARIA, MALNUTRITION, SAVE A CHILD IN NIGERIA

Lack of access to quality and affordable healthcare services remains a big challenge to the people of Itamerin and neighborhood, a suburb in Ibadan city of Nigeria. The incorporated trustee of Oak Rural Health Organization (ORHO) in Ibadan Oyo state Nigeria, take free healthcare services to villages and settlements in the state. Since January 2018, the organization has provided free healthcare services to over 1000 villagers. Baby "S" was among the 82 children treated for malaria during our recent outreach in Arulogun village of Akinyele local government area of Oyo state Nigeria. She is a 9 months old baby presented with high grade fever(38.9°c), weakness and inability to eat. The mother had earlier treated her with drugs purchased from village drug hawker( a common care alternative in the locality), but no improvement. Baby S tested positive for malaria parasite, using our rapid test kit. She was immediately placed on treatment. One week later, our team went on followup visit to the village. Sighting us from distance, the mother couldn't hold her joy and expressed how our intervention turned to be the saving angel of her daughter.

The organization is still working with other children like baby S in the neighborhood. We have paid for an apartment to be used for provision of outpatient services within the community. A healthcare staff has been hired. She is to provide health counseling, home visiting and follow ups, treatment of minor diseases and blood pressure monitoring for the villagers.

There are many task embeded in the concept of our project "end malaria, malnutrition, save a child in Nigeria" (MaMaH). Now that we have a place to better serve our targets. We need to stock it with antimalaria drugs, malaria test kits, vitamin supplements, and food supplements to help the severely malnourished ones among the children. Also, we need blood pressure measuring machine and anti hypertensive drugs for the local women within the project duration of 2 years. Thus, the need to reach our project funding goal of $30,008. The community is happy to have us around, we are also happy to help!
