Over the last three months, the Center for Civil Society and Democracy (CCSD) prepared case studies on 10 initiatives for 10 women-focused partner organisations, focusing on stories of impact and preparing for the next round of initiatives in Syria. This period has been defined by a commitment to adaptation. Based on direct feedback from our strategic partners and local organizations, we have created more responsive engagement tracks. In addition to our traditional three-year commitment, we have introduced an 18-month intensive and a 9-month bridge. These new paths significantly increase CCSD’s ability to meet local organizations where they are, supporting their development on their own terms and ensuring that the pace of growth matches the reality on the ground.
Responding to Crisis with Peacebuilding
Our work has been shaped by the immediate need to respond to recent violence and advocate on behalf of women-focused organizations. January and February saw a distressing outbreak of violence and increased tension surrounding the Kurdish issue. The rise in hate speech across Syria has been a concern for CCSD for several years, as it often serves as a precursor to further instability.
In response, one of the CSOs in our program last year conducted a vital intervention to promote peacebuilding and social cohesion. Fifteen youth participated in intensive training workshops on communication, conflict resolution, and creative thinking. Following these sessions, the youth formed specialized clubs to translate their knowledge into tangible actions. A highlight of this effort was a digital campaign featuring three short films. By using visual storytelling to counter hate speech, these youth reached a wide audience across social media, effectively enhancing digital community participation and spreading messages of peaceful coexistence. While CCSD cannot predict every crisis, we work to ensure CSOs are ready and able to respond to any need, no matter the timing.
Elevating the Voices of Women-Led Organizations
CCSD also held a landmark roundtable discussion with ten women-focused organizations to discuss the unique challenges they face and produce formal recommendations for the donor community. These leaders highlighted the complex needs of organizations focusing on women, emphasizing that their specialized expertise must not be overshadowed by larger, generalist NGOs. Their recommendations included:
Join Us in This Mission
None of this work, from the youth-led peacebuilding campaigns to the vital advocacy for women’s leadership, would be possible without your partnership. As we look toward the next year of the Civil Society Empowerment Program, the need for flexible, localized support in Syria has never been greater. Your contributions allow CCSD to provide the training, resources, and platforms these local organizations need to remain resilient in the face of ongoing challenges. We invite you to make a gift today to help us expand these new program tracks and ensure that more grassroots leaders have the tools to build a peaceful, inclusive future. Thank you for standing with us and for investing in the power of local change.
