Field success stories

By Ruth Arreyngang Abunaw | Project Leader

During this period Investing in People Worldwide (IPW) Cameroon’s team led by our project leader is carrying out monitoring and evaluation of women led businesses which were sponsored by us. Majority of the women who were given seed capital by us were equally trained by us with income generating initiatives (IGAs) such as; Entrepreneurship and business creation, Petty trade, skills building and education. While planning our other empowerment sessions after the rainy seasons, we visited these women who were trained by our team to monitor the progress of their businesses from the knowledge and support received from us. One of these women who is making remarkable progress in her business is Priscilla.

Priscilla is a young mother of four children. During our economic empowerment training last year in 2001, she was one of the most engaged and dedicated women who participated during the three weeks training. Priscila used the knowledge acquired from her training to start a petty trade within the community to support her family.

During our visit to Priscilla’s table business, she was happy to explain to our project leader the progress she has made so far, the different items she is selling and was happy to explain how helpful this table business is to her family. She has grown from selling just staple food to roasted plumps and plantains and now she just added fresh fruits to her lists of items. These are food items which are highly consumed by the community. She has a high demand for these items because though perishable she is able to sellout everything within limited time and thus making quick turn over to reinvest in her business.

Our project leader was so impressed by the progress made so far and we decided to give Priscilla financial support to help her grow her fruits business. Priscila could not contain her joy as she tightly hugged our project leader and express her gratitude for this support and how much it will increase her capital for the fruits business and thus increase her sales and the overall profit she will make.

How amazing it is to see young women, become financially literate, entrepreneurs, business minded and knowledgeable traders within our community from the training they received from us. Learning has no age, we can still learn even when we have several glass ceilings such as; early marriage, a large family with many children and poverty. No matter the age, women just like young women have the ability to shatter these ceilings through; determination, intentional commitment to the growth process, with a heart full of hope for the future.

Priscila is a true example of a resilient fighter, not willing to settle for the bare minimum despite the fact that she is an Internally Displaced woman with many children. She is making commendable progress in her host community and we are so proud of her.
