Joseph came to Nyumbani at age 7. Today, he's a graduate of Baringo Institute of Technology, Diploma in ICT in hand, and looking ahead to a career in tech.
"One memory that has stayed with me is the sense of family and belonging," Joseph says of growing up at Nyumbani. "We supported one another, shared meals, studied together, and celebrated every achievement as a community. Those experiences taught me that even in difficult circumstances, you can still find hope and happiness."
It was the caregivers and teachers there who shaped his path. "They encouraged me to work hard in school, believe in myself, and never give up on my dreams," he says. "Their guidance and care helped shape the person I am today."
His interest in ICT started early, sparked by access to computers and mentors in the field. "I have always been interested in technology and how it can solve everyday problems," Joseph explains. "Seeing how technology could improve education and communication inspired me to pursue the field."
The diploma wasn't easy. "The hardest part was balancing academic work with personal challenges and ensuring I stayed focused throughout the course," he says. "Some units were demanding, but determination, support from my lecturers, and the encouragement I received kept me going."
Graduation day made it worth it. "It was one of the happiest moments of my life," Joseph says. "I felt proud, grateful, and excited because it represented years of hard work, perseverance, and the support I received from many people along the way."
He's now focused on finding ICT work while continuing his education further. Looking five years out, he sees himself "working as an ICT professional, continuing to grow in my career, furthering my education, and using my knowledge to support others, especially young people who need guidance and encouragement."
To the donors who made it possible, his message is simple: "Thank you. Your support gave me more than an education; it gave me hope, confidence, and the opportunity to build a better future."
And to the next generation of kids at Nyumbani, just starting out: "Believe in yourself, work hard, and never stop dreaming. Every lesson you learn and every challenge you overcome brings you closer to your goals. Take advantage of every opportunity, be respectful, and remember that your background does not define your future."
