Thanks to your support, we’ve been able to empower women in Bolivia to make strong choices about their health and their futures.
Because of cultural taboos in Bolivia affecting health education and access to health services, 90.6% of young women do not use any kind of contraception. Young people need to be able to talk about their family planning and sexual health choices in order to make informed decisions about their future.
To help the community embrace these important conversations, we launched Estamos a Tiempo (Right on Time), a multi-media campaign designed to increase access to family planning and reproductive health services.
Calicanto, the 21-episode radio drama we developed, follows teens has they navigate the difficult decisions and conversations we face when falling in love for the first time. Characters like Sara unpack some of the toxic pressures that teens like her face in romantic relationships. She learns that she has the right to enjoy her sexual life without the abuse or manipulation of anyone else, making decisions when she feels the time is right.
Here's what one listener had to say:
“[I learned that] I don’t have to stay in a toxic relationship. I have sexual rights and I have to make my life plan, this radio novel is very beautiful and as Sara says: 'We are still on time.'" Anonymous 18 year old woman
The radio drama also helps listeners understand what resources are available to them (such as contraception, reproductive education, and professional health services.) But even more importantly, the drama explores how teens can initiate conversations with their parents and their peers to determine what needs are right for them.
Estamos a Tiempo has had a significant impact on tackling those cultural taboos and letting conversation flourish:
Estamos a Tiempo continues to be distributed in Bolivia and its popularity keeps growing, demonstrating the kind of continued impact your support helps us achieve.
