Empower Women and Girls Around the Globe

Every single person should be able to live a life free from abuse. At PCI Media, we’re playing our part to end violence against women and girls in the Caribbean.  

Violence against women and girls remains pervasive across the Caribbean and goes largely underreported due to impunity, stigma, and shame. Adolescent girls are particularly at risk of violence.  

But, together with UNICEF, we’re working to change the narrative.  

#PlayYourPart is a communications campaign launched out of the global Spotlight Initiative that aims to encourage people across the Caribbean region to play their part in changing entrenched, negative social norms, attitudes, and behaviors that lead to violence against women and girls.   

The program is designed to reach people at the family level, supporting healthy family dynamics and disrupting intergenerational cycles of violence that affect children early in life. #PlayYourPart will launch regionally across the Caribbean, followed by country-level activations.

During times of crisis, rates of unintended pregnancies, child marriage, and sexual violence increase, putting more women and girls’ futures at risk. But your continued support helps give more women like Maria a chance at a better life.   

Early and unintended pregnancy due to lack of information, child marriage, violence, and social norms continue to jeopardize millions of lives — especially for those in regions like East Africa, where an estimated 21.6 million women and girls have unintended pregnancies every year. The long-term effects can be catastrophic.   

Without a vision for her future, Maria’s unplanned pregnancy could have resulted in a lifetime of financial distress, dependency on a partner, and more unplanned pregnancies. But radio programs like Ouro Negro, help empower millions of women and girls like Maria to become self-sufficient and take back their futures.  

Your support for our programs to improve equality for women and girls has had the following results so far in Eastern and Southern Africa:  

• Over 161 million people reached  
• 90% of listeners changed a behavior  
• 75% discussed topics with others  
• 23% more listeners feel a duty to prevent child marriage  
• Reopened policy dialogues in Uganda to allow girls who are pregnant or have been pregnant access to education
