Reasons why your help is powerful
"How nice it is to walk through Chicago." Or maybe Paris, Vienna, Frankfurt, Montreal, Amsterdam, Mexico City or Buenos Aires. Then you came to San José, Costa Rica. Traffic, garbage, few green spaces. It also happened to a group of people who wanted to do something about it. But what to do? What could be memorable about San José?
The two main urban rivers (Torres and María Aguilar) are located in San José which are hidden from public sight and are inaccessible. Illegal construction and the dumping of waste is destroying this beautiful and fragile river ecosystem. With a lack of public space and active transportation networks (bike and pedestrian paths) in San José, these riverbanks present an opportunity to restore nature, improve air quality and provide safe and accessible public and active transportation spaces.

More than hugging trees
Our inspiration "we connect people to the city through nature". But this project has a potential that goes beyond idealism. Only for additional income in tourism, Rutas Naturbanas will generate almost $ 114 million annually to the country, to the city.
It's about reputation
We are one of the most respected citizen initiatives in the country. The government declared the foundation and the project of Public Interest. We won the Reto País 2019 contest. We maintain an active impact as content generators for more than 160,000 people through our digital communities and those of our co-proponents: PPAR, GAM Cultural, Árboles Mágicos, Chepecletas, Río Urbano y Amigos del Río Torres.. People want this project and be part of it. Even commercial competitors join forces to participate.
First section is ready
Rutas Naturbanas is already a reality, thanks to the joint participation between the Foundation and BN Fondos, which incorporated the route as part of the design of the new Central Bank building located in Barrio Tournón.
It is a route of 400 meters, with 250 meters in front of the Torres River and 200 meters of pedestrian paths, which allows people and communities to visit, make visible, protect and mobilize actively next to the river. This section has parking for bicycles, benches for contemplation, with a privileged view of the river.
“We believe that we can have a healthy nature in the city again. Therefore, our concept not only seeks to have a route next to the river but to generate circuits that connect green areas with public spaces and areas of interest within the city, ”said Dana Víquez, vice president of Rutas Naturbanas.
“We have to rethink the city. In the Latin American landscape, we cannot see urban nature as a separate issue. We must co-inhabit with them. That is why, in order to save a river, we must involve citizens, with people appropriate with their own planting, river cleaning, etc ”said Víquez.
For that reason, Rutas Naturbanas begins its work involving communities. “We cannot see the natural part alien to people, so it is important that these spaces become everyday so that they are valued. You cannot love what is not known, hence the importance of incorporating the river in the imaginary of the people, ”added Alonso Briceño, director of Rutas Naturbanas.
The only way to keep moving forward in this ambitious project is to add people like you. People with vision, decision power and resources to leave as a legacy the transformation of a city. Razones por las cuales su ayuda es poderosa
"Qué lindo es caminar por Chicago". O tal vez fue en Paris, Viena, Frankfurt, Montréal, Amsterdam, México DF o Buenos Aires. Luego conoció San José, Costa Rica. Tráfico, basura, pocos espacios verdes.
Nos pasó también a un grupo de personas que quisimos hacer algo al respecto. ¿Pero qué hacer? ¿Qué podía ser memorable de San José?
Ríos y espacios naturales que hace mucho se nos olvidaron. De ahí nació Rutas Naturbanas, una fundación con la que estamos construyendo un corredor natural de 25 kms para trasladarnos por una San José que todavía es verde. La parte más memorable y por ahora oculta de San José. Christiana Figueres lo resume muy bien.
Más que abrazar árboles.
Nuestro lema es "conectamos a las personas con la naturaleza". Pero este proyecto tiene un potencial que va más allá del idealismo. Solamente por ingresos adicionales en turismo, las Rutas Naturbanas le generará casi $114 millones anuales al país, a la ciudad.
Es sobre reputación
Somos una de las iniciativas ciudadanas más respetadas del país. El gobierno nos declaró de Interés Público. Ganamos el concurso RETO PAÍS. Mantenemos un impacto activo como generadores de contenido para más de 160,000 personas por medio de nuestras comunidades digitales y las de nuestros co-proponentes: PPAR, GAM Cultural, Árboles Mágicos, Chepecletas, Río Urbano y Amigos del Río Torres. Las personas quieren este proyecto y ser parte de él. Incluso competidores comerciales unen esfuerzos para participar.
Primer tramo construido
Rutas Naturbanas ya es una realidad, gracias a la participación conjunta entre la Fundación y BN Fondos, que incorporó la ruta de uso compartido como parte del diseño del nuevo edificio del Banco Central ubicado en Barrio Tournón.
Se trata de una ruta de 400 metros, con 250 metros frente al Río Torres y 200 metros de senderos peatonales, que permite a las personas y comunidades visitar, visibilizar, proteger y movilizarse en forma activaal lado del río. Este tramo cuenta con parqueo para bicicletas, bancas de descanso y contemplación, con una vista privilegiada al río.
“Creemos que podemos volver a tener naturaleza sana en la ciudad. Por eso, nuestro concepto no solo busca tener una ruta al lado del río sino generar circuitos que conecten las áreas verdes con espacios públicos y zonas de interés dentro de la ciudad”, explicó Dana Víquez, vicepresidenta de Rutas Naturbanas.
“Tenemos que repensar la ciudad. En el paisaje latinoamericano no podemos ver la naturaleza urbana como un tema aparte. Debemos co-habitar con ella. Por eso, para salvar un río, debemos involucrar a la ciudadanía, que las personas se apropien de sus plantas, su limpieza”, comentó Víquez.
Por esa razón, Rutas Naturbanas empieza su trabajo involucrando a las comunidades. “No podemos ver la parte natural ajena a la gente, por eso es importante que estos espacios se vuelvan cotidianos para que se valoren. No se puede amar lo que no se conoce, de ahí la importancia de incorporar el río en el imaginario de la gente”, agregó Alonso Briceño, director de Rutas Naturbanas y d Río Urbano.
La única forma de seguir avanzando en este ambicioso proyecto es sumar personas como usted. Gente con visión, poder de decisión y recursos para dejar como legado la transformación de una ciudad.
