What is the profile of our children?

Mayama currently serves a population of 240 children and 130 families. This population, in addition to a diagnostic base (study of metropolitan areas of Guadalajara, Mexico on marginalization and violence); they were candidates and attended a comprehensive evaluation process. We used standardized instruments in three areas: 1) socioeconomic status 2) family background (detection of violence) 3) detection of developmental/ psychological age according to their actual age.

The criteria that Mayama use for determining their beneficiaries is:

Children and families living in the 4 colonies that has worked before.
Boys/girls aged 6 to 9 years who are in situations of abandonment, risk of being on the street, school dropouts, child labor, group home/shelter.
Children that are at least one year behind in developmental age compared to actual age.
Families living in overcrowded houses living in abuse and domestic violence.
The minimum income per household is approximately three dollars a day.
Parents are illiterate and/or truncated education.

The above characteristics of marginalization and violence are also called “multidimensional poverty indicators” i.e. colonies would be lacking in education, health care and social welfare (by the UNDP –United Nations Development Program).

A brief reminder: What is Mayama?

In 2008, with the intention of seeking social justice and equal opportunities for girls and boys who live in poverty and violence situation, Jorge Huguenin founded Mayama A.C., (Civil Association for its acronym in Spanish). In the beginning, Mayama provided educational activities such as art classes, computer science lessons and Tae Kwon Do for 500 children in abandon, orphan and outcast situation from 14 shelter homes in the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara. In 2009, a diagnosis was made by specialists in the subjects of poverty and violence. In order to respond concretely to this diagnosis, Mayama, rethinking its mission, focused on five suburbs of the same community: “Cofradía, Emiliano Zapata, San Martin de las Flores, Plan de Oriente and Lomas del Tapatio”, located in Tlaquepaque and Tonala, Jalisco in Mexico.

The same year, Monica Varela and Alejandra Peña designed a Human Development Model based on alternative learning methodologies, also relying on alliances from NGO (Non Governanmental Organizations) as “Cuidarte” (Emotional development), Juconi (Violence), Youth Integration Centers (addiction prevention), “La Vaca independiente” (Communications skills methodologies).

From 2010 to nowadays, Mayama has served an average (annual) of 240 children and 130 families (840 direct and 2520 indirect beneficiaries), so they are able to develop skills that help them make assertive decisions based on their human rights, gender equality and peace culture. Mayama has also helped to improve their education and job expectations in a medium and long term, with the purpose of turning them into agents of positive change in their individual, family and community life.

It is noteworthy that the transparency, quality and professionalism of Mayama is backed up by institutions like CEMEFI (Mexican Center for Philanthropy), Filantrofilia A.C., Confío A.C. (Building transparent Civil Organizations). In addition, it has been recognized (April 2015) as a organization with Consultative Status of ECOSOC-UN (United Nations Economic and Social Council) and “Razón de Ser” Award (source category) by Merced Foundation.

We won a prize: Reason Being!

It seems that this 2015 has been the year of celebration for Mayama. In the last quarter we share that we celebrated 6 years of life serving children and families in high poverty, besides that we obtained the Consultative Status of ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council) of UN (United Nations). In this occasion we share you with much happiness and pride that in the month of September we were recognized by the Merced Foundation with a Prize called “Reason for Being” in the category of Origin (in Spanish “Premio Razón de Ser”). Of the four categories recognized by Merced Foundation (Origin, Education, Habitat Sustainable and Disability) category “Origin”, it is the highest honor, recognizing the high level of institutionalization, professionalism of the Organization, Innovation and Social Impact.

In 6 years, Mayama has consolidated an educational model whose innovative techniques contributes to children and their families, who live in areas of high poverty, violence, abuse, orphan hood and exclusion, develop themselves, develop skills that will allow them to Overcoming Difficulties of their environment and improve their quality of life.

By 2015, Mayama has served with this educational model to 330 children and 177 families in Tlaquepaque and Tonala, Jalisco, Mexico. On August, 80 children who were admitted in 2011 (after 5 years of attendance) have concluded the program. Now is the turn of the 4th Generation of 85 children and 50 families who joined this month.

They are here for acquire new educational tools in order to Transform Scenarios of social exclusion, inequality, educational backwardness, lack of access to health services, few job opportunities and the violation of these rights that They Live.

What is the Criteria to determine these girls, children and their families have Mayama profile? We will share in the next report.
