The youth and women in our society are in need of livelihood options. However, most often they do not have the means to get the required skill sets for the same, hence limiting their options.
Our Karigari Program helps to improve the status of Women / Youth in the society by providing them with livelihood options through vocational training in the areas based on beneficiaries’ preferences and aptitude.
Computer literacy offered at our centers allows beneficiaries to build careers in IT related fields like BPO Centers, Data Processing Units and lately in UID centers etc. especially in the cities like Delhi, Gurgaon & Kolkata hence creating entrepreneurs.
Stitching, Embroidery, Beauty Culture, Block Printing, Tie & Die etc enables beneficiaries to get employment in the garment industry or set up their own stitching and tailoring units.
Vocational training in driving encourages beneficiaries to build careers as drivers in the automobile, transport and travel industry or seek self-employment as professional drivers.
Community-based skills like home kitchen gardening and organic farming empower them to sustain themselves in their community.
The opportunities are created in the following manner:
What makes Karigari unique:
-The complete program is free of charge, with all equipment and raw material provided by Literacy India
- The beneficiaries are exposed to real life workshops at the center where the work is happening
- The involvement of Literacy India does not end with training. There are regular visits by coordinators to help the beneficiaries get jobs and start their own enterprise.
Beneficiary Story:
Name: Anuj (Name Changed) Location: Rajasthan
Anuj is a young boy from a remote tribal village Sadla outside of Manoharthana, Rajasthan.
Born into an extremely poor family, Anuj was educated in the local village school. But once he had finished that basic schooling, he had no work to do, nothing to look forward to.
He had no means, other than minor farming to support himself and his family.
Anuj started to work at a Mobile repairing shop as a trainee and learned how to repair mobile phones and how to manage a shop. Yet, he was able to earn a very meager amount which was insufficient to fulfill the family need.
But change was around the corner. One day, he attended an enterprise development workshop held under the Karigari Program. He participated in it and realized that he could open his own shop. He took guidance from the workshop leader and started to work on it.
He has been assigned to find the suitable locations for customers by analyzing the nature of the business and local community need. He worked hard and shared his rough plan that what would be suitable for him. He took a soft loan of Rs.15000 from Literacy India and added 10,000 from his family making a total of Rs25000 capital invested to open his own Mobile repairing cum Bank Mitra shop. He is able to provide various financial services at his shops like money transfer, cash deposit and rural banking services offered by governments.
His mobile repair shop is situated at a nearby village Khamkhera market. Now he is able to earn approx. 12000- 15000 per month. He has started repaying his monthly instalment of Rs1000 per month.
Today, Anuj is able to support his family and is grateful to Literacy India for helping create a livelihood for him.
