Activities & Project

Literacy India was born in 1996 as a non-profit organization with the objective of educating underprivileged women and children, and empowering them to become self-reliant and employable.

It can rightly be synonymized with three very powerful words: Education, Empowerment and Employment.

While making quality education available to the marginalized children is at the core of Literacy India’s mission, it is also important to provide this education with a purpose. And that purpose is to make the youth in our communities employable.

Following this objective, we have been running several employability enhancement programs for our youth under the umbrella vocation training program- Karigari. Karigari focuses on enhancing the employability of members of the communities that we engage with including youth, women, farmers, and tribal communities. Since its launch in 2002, we have trained more than 100,000 people in various vocational skills across the country. We try to train them in line with their interest as well as the needs of the community in order to improve their chances of getting employed.

 Our training modules include:

STORIES OF CHANGE  Name:- Jeevan (Name Changed)   Location:- Gurugram

Jeevan is a student of Vidyapeeth at Literacy India. He opted for the mobile repairing course for his pre vocational training. Jeevan’s parents are daily wage labourers and are not at all educated but they understand the importance of education. They appreciated that their son was becoming well versed with mobile repairing but insisted that he finished his education and pursued Class XII from Vidyapeeth.

Jeevan completed the 6 months mobile repairing course at Literacy India in which he learnt how to fix most mobile related issues like changing the touch screen, fixing the PCB related issues etc. He then visited the springboard “start-up journey” session in Gurgaon to know more about how to set up a business of his own. The session motivated him and persuaded him to move ahead. He was supported by his mentors at Literacy India to start the mobile repairing shop and was provided a soft loan of Rs.10,000.

Jeevan has started a mobile repairing shop in his locality. This venture is only 1 ½ month old but is already a good source of income for them. Jeevan is able to earn 8,000-10,000 per month already. He gets a lot of confidence and satisfaction from this. Jeevan gives the credit to Literacy India and is optimistic about his future. Literacy India wishes him all the best and would like to support him to realize his dreams.
