*THEME: REMOVING THE BARRIERS BETWEEN A CHILD AND THE CLASSROOM*
*REPORT*
*BACKGROUND*
- Many children in slum want to learn but face barriers
- No fees, no books, no food, no uniform
- Poverty builds a wall between child and classroom
*OBJECTIVES*
- Remove barrier of school fees
- Remove barrier of no materials
- Remove barrier of hunger
- Remove barrier of homelessness & hopelessness
*ACTIVITIES DONE*
- Removed fee barrier for 45 children - fees paid
- Removed materials barrier - books, pens, uniforms to 150 children
- Removed hunger barrier - daily meals to 200+ children
- Removed shelter barrier - 12 homeless children housed
- Removed hopelessness - counseling & home visits to 60 families
*ACHIEVEMENTS*
- 520+ children crossed from barrier to classroom
- Attendance increased
- Performance improved
- Street children reduced
- Community trust increased
*CHALLENGES*
- Many barriers still remain - limited funds
- Food not enough for all 520 daily
- No own premises - renting
- High cost of fees & materials
- Few staff & no transport
*WAY FORWARD*
- Raise funds to remove barriers permanently - own land & classrooms
- Expand feeding to remove hunger for all 520
- Start income project for sustainability
- Build more partnerships
- Improve accountability
*CONCLUSION & APPEAL*
- Every barrier removed = one more child in classroom
