In 2005, it was estimated that 45 million children in sub-Saharan Africa had lost either one or both parents to death, and 13 million of these children were orphaned by AIDS (USAID, UNAIDS, & UNICEF, 2005). In Uganda, children face significant barriers to education-including poverty, gender inequality, child marriage, and limited access to menstrual health products. Many families fail to educate children which limits their potential and undermines entire communities.
Gaba hope for kids social workers identify the most vulnerable children and enroll them in different programs in education, livelihoods and health. The school is funded by individual sponsors who pay monthly donations. Each child is provided with the opportunity to go to school, two meals a day, access to safe, clean drinking water and free basic medical care. From the first day that the child joins the program, is very much involved in the child's welfare, health, and education.
By supporting the most vulnerable children, this project can profoundly impact the entire community. With their children safe and fed, parents can focus on lifting themselves out of the extreme poverty that has plagued them. The organization's trainings and investment into small businesses are also facilitating lasting change.
