Employable Education for rural Ghanaian Students

As we anticipate another busy term at the various computer laboratories across the country in the next few weeks, The Turing Trust is embarking on a nationwide training for all the ICT teacher’s to equip them with the necessary skill and ‘know-how’ on how they can maintain the various computers at their computer laboratories.

Beginning with the British High Commission/JustGhana sponsored schools namely; Accra Royal school, Manprobi Methodist Primary School, Amamoley Primary/JHS and Konkunuru Methodist School, we trained all the IT teachers from these schools and together with the teachers updated all the educational resources on the computers for optimum use in the coming term.

At the end of the training, some of the teacher’s expressed their views on what they have learnt from the training;

1. “My name is Kofi, the IT teacher at Konkunuru Primary School, I am blessed to be part of this training, I am very ready for the new term, Thanks for the training but please let this be a regular exercise”

1. “Joe is my name and I am very grateful for this training, there can’t be a better way to prepare for next term, thank you very much”

UPDATES FROM MAINTENANCE AND SAFETY WORKSHOPS-(2017/18 ACADEMIC YEAR).

After our training in the Volta region last year, our reports on faults have reduced significantly and we are very happy about. This shows that our participants at the various training have been serious with the maintenance and safety and are applying what the learnt.

With our just ended training in Accra, the ICT teachers are able to troubleshoot some of the computer problems. They are now eager to attempt the repairs before the Turing Trust’s intervention. When they can’t repair some faults, they provide us with some technical information that will help to make the repair work faster.  With the ICT teachers armed with knowledge of computer safety and maintenance coupled with the basic computer troubleshooting and repair skills means, a safe lab for the student’s use, well maintained computer systems, and a little reduction of the repair work needed to be performed by the Turing Trust.

These projects and all the work of the Turing Trust would not be possible without the generous donations. Thank you very much for everything that has been contributed, we and all of the students are very grateful.

As we begin the 2017/18 school academic in year in Ghana this September, there have been new admissions at the various schools across the country and we were happy to catch-up with some of the ‘freshers’ ( first year students) at the computer laboratories.

Their zeal and enthusiasm at the computer laboratory was very encouraging. These are some comments from some of them;

1. ‘My name is Francisca, a first year student studying Fashion and designing. I am so glad to be here to use the computers for the first time; l didn’t get the opportunity to use one at my Junior high school because we didn’t have any computers there. But with this well-resourced, beautiful computer laboratory, I will make the best use of it to become a professional fashion designer.’
2. I am called Loyal, a first year Building Draughtsmanship student. I am very happy to be part of your wonderful support here. With these computers, l believe l can work faster and easier at my department because there are much new software that will make it easy when am designing and building. Thank you very much.

UPDATES FROM MAINTENANCE AND SAFETY WORKSHOPS-(2016/17 ACADEMIC YEAR).

Our first site visits this academic year took us to Prabon JHS and Primary School, Akwaduo JHS and Primary School and Tetrefu ICCES Centre. There was clear evidence of positive impact the ICT training workshops we held last academic year have had.

The ICT teachers can now troubleshoot some basic issues computers often have, and the teachers are even undertaking repairs without the Turing Trust’s intervention.
