Meeting the electric students

My name is Alix Halloran and I am GlobalGiving's Field Traveler in West Africa. I'm currently traveling in Ghana, meeting with all of GlobalGiving's nonprofit partners. I was very excited to have a chance to meet with the Turing Trust team and to see their work in action! They are having an amazing impact on communities all around Ghana.

I got to visit one of the Turing Trust's partner schools, the Afoako ICCES. There are 60 ICCES centres all over Ghana! I was very impressed by the quality of instruction and the passion expressed by the students. The students can study fashion, carpentry, electric, building, or catering. They also take additional courses in math, computer skills, and English. On the day of my visit, the students were having their practicals. I could tell that they were excited to put all their classroom learning into practice! The building students practiced laying a wall, the fashion students were making purses, and the electric students wired lights.

Many of these students would not have the opportunity to study at secondary school. They will graduate from their programs with employable skills. Some of the students that I talked to said that they had already made some money working in their communities during the holidays!

I'm so thankful for Turing Trust's donors who have helped to make this amazing work possible. I am confident that Turing Trust will continue to have a huge impact for a long time to come!

YES! We Have Made It – It’s Time to Give Back to the School

On a recent visit to Afoako ICCES in Ghana we spoke with a student in his final year of study about to graduate in two weeks’ time. Aboagye Sampson has just sat his Building Construction exams last week and has found some time to plant flowers outside the computer lab as a way to give something back to the centre. He is 21 years old and came from the Western Region with his senior cousin, Agyei Richard, to seek employable skills. Before the course they were both living at home with their parents and working as crop sprayers, which only provide seasonal employment at a low wage. During their studies they have worked hard and got the most from the centre by not only learning Building construction (their primary course) but also learning from the other courses such as, electrical and carpentry. They even had the opportunity to work with builders and gain valuable experience and even money throughout their course. Now that they have acquired their qualification they will easily find permanent work throughout the year.

Back at the hub, Sam and I have been very busy with the arrival of our latest shipment of 400 computers from the United Kingdom.

We have been installing educational software and making sure they are at an optimum standard ready for distribution to the ICCES centres of the Volta Region. At the moment, we have a helping hand from Julia, an intern from Scotland hoping to gain further experience in the operation of a development charity. Julia has been visiting the centres in the Ashanti region and giving ICT lessons to help the students to get the most from the machines we have donated. She will be continuing this training on our trip to Accra and the Volta Region.

These projects and all the work of the Turing Trust would not be possible without the generous donations. Thank you very much for everything that has been contributed, we and all of the students are very grateful.

More news from Ghana!

It's been a busy time in Ghana as always, even more so as our next shipment of computers will arrive shortly!

In the meantime we've been busy with many training days being held for ICCES Centre Managers and ICT Teachers in the Volta region (at Kedzi ICCES) in the Great Accra region (at Ngleshie Amanfro ICCES) and in the Ashanti region (at Afoako ICCES).

A total of 65 delegates attended the training sessions and feedback was good. In particular, the session on e-learning and using the resources on the computers to support all subjects, was well received. It was very clear from our visits to both ICCES and other schools where we have set up computer labs that ongoing training and support is essential to ensure the most effective use of resources.

Topics covered included:

Learning about School Management from International Experience
RACHEL (GCF 2015) / Bernard Poole
COTVET information collection
Collecting and analysing data in Excel
Presenting in Powerpoint
Google Forms and Spreadsheets
E-learning
Demonstration of EasyGenerator module
Demonstration of Moodle
Demonstration of aligning syllabus to curriculum

In future we plan to also assist with other requested topics such as:

Networking
E-learning
AutoCAD
Data analysis using Excel and databases
Computer hardware and programming

Visits to Primary and Junior High Schools with Computer labs

We were also able to visit several other schools, including Mamprobi Methodist Primary School, Accra Royal Primary School, Prabon School and Tetrefu Junior High School. The computer lab at Mamprobi was very well set up and maintained (including a blower to ensure computers were kept free of dust) and computers were integrated into the curriculum.
