The DANA of October 29, 2024, with its devastating effects, highlighted how climate-related disasters exacerbate structural inequalities, particularly among the most vulnerable populations, such as those with whom Médicos del Mundo works: migrants, women in prostitution, and homeless people.
The socioeconomic context in Valencia and Alicante in 2024 reflects a rise in inequalities. The housing crisis is one of the main factors exacerbating the situation, as the lack of affordable housing and rising rent prices force many people to live in precarious conditions or even end up on the streets.
Added to this are public policies that are insufficient to address the specific needs of the most marginalized people. Migrants, who face administrative barriers, not only struggle to access basic services such as healthcare but also face a climate of discrimination and racism that further marginalizes them. For their part, women in prostitution continue to struggle to gain access to healthcare and social services due to stigmatization and social exclusion.
Homeless people, especially in large cities like Valencia and Alicante, continue to live in conditions of extreme vulnerability, with a significant increase in the number of people living on the streets.
Given this situation, it is essential to implement inclusive public policies that guarantee access for all vulnerable groups to basic services—such as healthcare, housing, and social inclusion—to ensure that no one is left behind in a context of growing inequality.
Medicos del Mundo works on the frontline to impreve this situation.
