The gender gap is evident when analyzing data on those who have dependents and the impact on mental health:
Of those cared for with dependents, 77% of those who care for minors, the elderly, or people with functional diversity are women, compared to 37% of men.
Among those caring for the elderly, women outnumber men three to one, 75 to 18.
The burden of caregiving could impact mental health: 79% of women treated report anxiety, compared to 73% of men.
With regard to sleep disturbances, 67% of women present this symptom, compared to 63% of men.
This gender difference is even greater among people who report feeling fear: 29% of men compared to 44% of women treated.
We warn that the disproportionate burden on women is not receiving the attention it deserves: "Women in the affected areas are supporting the recovery of many families, both in the emotional management of grief and in the accompaniment and basic needs of the elderly, children, and dependent persons. This reality has an impact on mental health that must be addressed. In the context of reconstruction, we should answer the question of who is caring for those who care," says Andrea Sixto, president of Médicos del Mundo in the Valencian Community.
