Japan Platform(JPF) has decided to launch a program to assist victims of Typhoon Hagibis, which caused serious damage in many regions of Japan. Tyhoon Hagibis wreaked damage in Chiba Prefecture which was also affected by Typhoon Faxai. As it is difficult to distinguish between the damages caused by these two typhoons, this program will merge with the current program for Typoon Habigis, the Emergency Response to Typhoon Faxai.
At this point, it has been confirmed that Typoon Hagibis has caused extensive and severe damage including flooding, landslides, swelling and overflowing of rivers, and power and water outage. There is a possibiliy that the number of evacuees may increase significantly going forward and that extent of the damage and need for assistance may also expand as further information is gathered on assistance needed to repair houses and for victims of the typhoon who have remained in their homes.
On Oct.13, the JPF Secretariat, together with Japan Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster(JVOAD), sent its initial response teams to gather information on the extent of the damage and need for assistance in the four locations that have been severely affected:Nagano Prefecture, Chia prefecture, the Tohoku region, and the North Kanto region.
JPF will work with local governnents and JPF member NGOs to understant the extent of the damage and gather information on what is needed, and will swifty implement assistance based on those findings. Future developments will be reported on the JPF website as well as through its Facebook account.
This project has provided additional documentation in a DOCX file (projdoc.docx).
