Summary

Around 4:27 PM on July 28, 2026, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck Kumamoto Prefecture, recording a seismic intensity of 7 in cities like Uki and Hikawa. Kumamoto Prefecture is in the central-western part of Kyushu region in Japan. It also experienced a large earthquake back in 2016. The temperatures in the disaster area are high, and the shelters are in tough conditions. We're going to support the disaster victims as much as we can to prevent any secondary damage.

Challenge

At approximately 4:27 p.m. on July 28, 2026, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck with its epicenter in the Kumamoto region of Kumamoto Prefecture, and seismic intensity level 7 was recorded in Uki City and Hikawa Town. In the Uki City area in particular, reports indicate road cracks and uneven surfaces, broken windows in government buildings, as well as casualties at commercial facilities and factories. Amid the extreme heat, the affected areas are experiencing water shortages and power outages.

Solution

We, JPF has began emergency aid and on-site needs assessments on the day of the earthquake through its member NGO who has extensive experience providing relief during large-scale disasters in Japan and is capable of rapid response by leveraging its collaborative networks with local communities. We are assessing the extent of the damage and determining the need for rescue, medical, and relief supply operations, with plans to expand assistance as necessary.

Long-Term Impact

We will be working with more member NGOs, using each strengths to provide support in areas like healthcare, food, water and sanitation, daily necessities, and shelters. When the earthquake hit Kumamoto in 2016, more people actually lost lives after the quake, so we're planning all kinds of support to save lives. Right now, we still can't see the full extent of the damage, but we would like to help people prepare for aftershocks, and contribute to rebuilding the community.
