Japan Platform (JPF), an international NGO providing Emergency Humanitarian Aid, has decided to launch a program on January 2, 2024, to provide emergency aid the victims of the earthquake that struck the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture on January 1, 2024, measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale (preliminary figures). The decision has been made to launch a program to provide emergency assistance to the victims of the earthquake.
The area is with old houses with more elderly people. Many houses were destroyed, and people were still waiting for rescue after a week from the disaster. The problem is the road situation is very bad and it made rescue team going into the area difficult. At the same time, the area has been continuously having the smaller earthquake. Noto peninsula, Ishikawa prefecture is a cold temperatures area. Many evacuees have been in extremely bad environment such as sleeping in cars more than a week.
Japan Platform has a consortium of more than 40 experienced NGOs and have gone through some earthquake disasters in the past in Japan including Tohoku earthquake (2011) and Kumamoto earthquake (2016). NGOs have strength in different areas such as rescue, medical, evacuation center management, mental care, house cleaning,.etc. and Japan Platform will have coordination role to be best possible for the affected communities.
For example, Japan Platform have experience in Tohoku or Kumamoto with post disaster support as well. If we have a budget, we will try to support local community to stand by themselves again. For example, we supported Kumamoto to create a local non-profit team to deal with future disaster or problems and it worked during flood in the area under covid 19 pandemic.
