Meals Provide Lifeline for Downtown Seniors

By Julie Piper Finley | Director of Marketing & Communications

It's been hot this summer. For frail, low-income seniors in downtown Portland who live in residence hotels or studio apartments without air conditioning, coming to the Meals on Wheels People Elm Court Center in downtown Portland has been a haven. Not only do they have a place to go that is cool, they receive a hot and nutritious meal daily. For many of those we serve, this meal is their only food of the day. Seniors in downtown Portland are often overlooked and forgotten. They are part of Portland's "hidden hungry" who struggle to make ends meet and to find food that is affordable. The meals we serve at Elm Court Center are balanced and include whole fruit, a luxury for many. Without the meals at Elm Court Center, many of our clients would go hungry. What we provide is not a luxury, but basic sustanance that allows older adults in downtown Portland to remain independent and living in their own homes.

We recently received this note from a client at Elm Court Center: "I just would like to take a few lines to tell you how much I appreciate the great effort and fine planning you do for the Elm Court Center. My wife and I have been struggling to make ends meet and we were so grateful to discover the Elm Court Center! When my wife came home from the hospital, you sent over Meals on Wheels and that was a blessing. Thank you for all you do for us old folks."

Between June 1 and Aug. 15, 2016, Elm Court Center served and delivered 22,158 meals to nearly 1,000 older adults in downtown Portland. That was made possible, in part, by the donatinos from Global Giving. Thank you for supporting senior nutrition in downtown Portland.
