Between November 1st – January 31st Meals on Wheels People served 25,841 heart-healthy, nutritious meals to 390 vulnerable, homebound or houseless seniors, in addition to providing nutrient-rich supplemental food (such as hard-boiled eggs, cottage cheese, peanut butter and hummus) so older adults in the Elm Court service area would stay well-fed between meals. Here’s what recent participants had to say about our meal services:
To address the challenge of social isolation and loneliness, trained staff and volunteers touch base with each senior they deliver to, initiating friendly conversations and double-checking on the senior’s overall health and wellbeing. When needed, staff and volunteers connect participants to additional social supports and refer them to local services and resources for assistance. Volunteers provided conversation and camaraderie with each delivered meal in the Elm Court Center service area, as well as ensuring that our Service Specialists connected seniors to local resources with a “warm hand-off” to confirm that clients are actually receiving the social supports they need.
As one senior movingly noted, “Meals on Wheels People is the first group that really treats me like a person and not a bum or a burden. They talk to me like a human being.” A family member of a former (deceased) client noted, “…meal delivery to him was not only for the nourishment, but the care, interest and compassion shown by the person delivering the meals was wonderful; checking in and engaging him in discussion was so important.”
