Our Elm Court Center in downtown Portland provides hot meals and companionship to our most food-insecure senior clients. Many of those we serve live in one-room apartments or residential hotels with no ability to cook or prepare food. And most of those who dine with us live at or below the poverty level. The meals they receive at our Elm Court Center are often the only food they receive all day. Betwee Jan. 1 and Apr. 15 of this year, we served and delivered 31,500 meals to 1,042 older adults in the downtown Portland area. About one-third of those dine at our center seven days a week and without Meals on Wheels People, these elders would go hungry. Seniors often represent the "hidden hungry" in our society. A lot of media attention is focused on children and families who suffer from food insecurity, but seniors are often forgotten. Meals on Wheels People is the only organization in the area that provides meal specifically for seniors.
