CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS WITH THE POOR COMMUNITY
By Chinwe Ofudi and Chinwe Obi | Project Manager and Project Coordinator

This program was organized and executed by the girls of the Elara Study centre. In their quest to contribute positively to the community, the girls identified the need to provide the residents of different poor communities in Lagos State with clothing, household items and food during the Christmas celebration.
This idea was born out while interacting with the residents of the community with the aim of providing basic human needs during the festive season. The girls involved their family, friends, and peers in gaining the resources.
The girls grouped themselves and assigned each group to visit a specific community, where the gifts were distributed. 7 families with a total number of 32 people benefited from the program.
The exercise, the climax of solidarity Saturday, allowed the girls to participate more actively in serving the communities and practicing the leadership skills learned from Student Taking Active Responsibility in the Society (STARS) program. This increased social awareness and responsibility among the girls.

PEER PRESSURE, MENTAL HEALTH AND DOUBLE STANDARDS
By Chinwe Ofudi | Project Leader

This program was carried out by the girls attending the activities at Elara Study Centre. They identified these 3 topics as common issues among teenagers which cause negative changes in behavior, insecurities, and mental health deterioration. As their own way of taking active responsibility in the society, they set out to make their contribution towards changing this narrative.
The program was in 3 phases, which included: spreading awareness using social media, a webinar where a professional spoke on problems teenagers experience and practical ways of dealing with them. Lastly, a physical session in their school where they shared what they had learnt at the morning assembly reaching about 700 students and charging them to be committed in supporting and inspiring other girls to make positive choices.
This project gave them the opportunity to practice the teamwork and leadership skills they had learnt from the STARS (Student Taking Active Responsibility in the Society) program.

"Skill-Up" in the Solidarity Saturdays
By Chinwe Ofudi and Chinwe Obi | Program Managers

Most solidarity Saturday beneficiaries are secondary school girls who attend public schools with poor facilities and some who cannot attend school. Recently we identified that we could improve the program by introducing basic computer skills. We identified this gap through interacting with them during the personal academic coaching program. The girls who attend the formative activities at Elara Study Centre identified this as a need and decided to organize a computer acquisition skills session starting in May 2022.
So far, we have had two sessions. Some girls needed to learn the basics, like identifying the various parts of the computer and how to use them. A few others went further into the use of basic computer applications. In all, peer mentors at Elara engaged them through a personalized approach, adapting to the needs of each one.
This experience has enriched the girls who volunteer to run the Solidarity Saturday program. Experiencing a significant learning gap with their peers helps them be more aware of their opportunities. Subsequently, some of them have decided to join the organizing team to facilitate the organization of Solidarity Saturdays.
