Education - the only hope

Greetings from IDEA Foundation!

IDEA Foundation is working to improve education and employment opportunities in underprivileged communities through support classes for children and vocational training for youth and women. Our Study centers are greatly successful in reducing school dropout ratio but we often see that children are forced to end their education after primary school as they cannot afford secondary education. This leaves them with limited career options.

Keeping this in mind we have started IDEA sponsorship program which supports children who cannot afford the education at all. The children are selected from our study centers or from communities we work.

Case study: Shreyas is a 14-year-old boy studying in 9^th standard. He is good in studies. Though he is shy, he expresses thoughts clearly in his essays. He lives in his joint family, with grandfather, grandmother, mother and younger brother. His father has passed away few months ago due to kidney failure. His family tried their best to save him, his grandmother donated her kidney but the surgery wasn’t successful. They even sold their land for meeting the expenses. His grandfather who was a great support to the family by working as a security guard is retired now as he is too old to work. His mother is working as a maid servant, but her income is insufficient to meet all the needs of the big family. So children’s educational expenses is a big problem. Through IDEA sponsorship, a donor is supporting the education of Shreyas. Thank you, dear donor, for supporting us to make a difference.

This year we are sponsoring the education of 600 such children. Along with financial support for paying school fees, we also provide them school uniform and notebooks. The children are taken for different exposure visits and camps which motivates them to continue education. We also provide career guidance and academic support programs.

Neha, chasing her dreams

Warm Greetings from IDEA Foundation!

Neha completed her engineering from a well-reputed college for engineering. Hailing from an economically weak family in Pune, this would not have been possible for Neha without the support and guidance of IDEA foundation, she recalls. Her father was already retired from his low salaried job and mother was working as a receptionist in a hospital to meet the expenses of her family with 3 children. Her brother could study only up to 10^th standard and sister has completed BCom. Though Neha was a bright student, her parents were not aware of how to provide her with better education opportunities.

Neha was always an ambitious girl but she was unsure about how her family will support her higher education. During this time of uncertainty, IDEA team visited her school to scout for needy talented children who need support for continuing education, she was one among those children who were selected, after considering their economic background and potential. She was in 8^th standard when she was chosen by the IDEA team after an interview to understand her aspirations and willingness to make use of the opportunity. Soon she was in support from sponsors.

There was no looking back after this for Neha. She could focus all her attention on her studies without worrying about the finances. After completing 12^th she joined government polytechnic college to pursue a diploma in engineering. After the completion of the diploma, she got admission in College of Engineering Pune for computer engineering. All through her education, she was supported by sponsors through IDEA.

Soon she was placed in good MNC as an associate engineer. She has been working there for 3 months. She is thankful to IDEA for supporting her and for giving proper guidance. In her own words “Connection with IDEA Foundation has not only given me the financial support but also the experience of connecting to society and social awareness. IDEA Foundation staff has always been helpful and encouraging. Activities such as different vocational courses, skill enhancement courses, and some recreational courses are really helpful and full of enjoyment. I am really lucky to be part of such a good organization. Thank you for support and for such a great experience.”

We at IDEA are really proud and satisfied to see children like Neha who have made use of their opportunities and made a difference in their life. Such children are role models for others to work hard and chase their dreams. IDEA felicitated her with Model Student Award recently.

Arya, turning obstacle to a stepping stone

IDEA sponsorship program is a great help to children like Arya. In India, many children are victims of alcoholism. In underprivileged communities, people easily get addicted to liquor and forget their family responsibilities. They don’t realize the importance of sending their children to school. Arya also belonged to such a family.

Arya was just 6 years old when she migrated to Pune from a nearby village. As her father was alcoholic and had a criminal background, her mother had to take the bold decision of leaving him for the sake of her children. She didn’t have any idea about future. She realized that if she stays with him she will never be able to send her children to school.

But she did not have any income to educate her children. So she left her hometown and migrated to Pune in search of some job to support her children, she got a job as a domestic help but her income wasn’t sufficient to send her children to school. But she knew the importance of education and decided to educate her children somehow. She came to know about IDEA sponsorship program and applied for sponsorship for her daughter. We understood her situation and decided to support Arya with our sponsorship program for deserving children. Arya is under the sponsorship of IDEA from the first standard.

IDEA is proud to inform you that Arya successfully completed 10^th standard this year with an excellent score of 87.8%. Arya is not only good in studies, she actively participates in all extracurricular activities. She understands that she has to make use this opportunity and bring out the best in her. She is a good writer and speaks fluent English. She writes very good essays with her original ideas. As you may be knowing our sponsorship program focus on the all round development of children, not just financial support .

Arya’s mother is thankful to IDEA foundation for giving her daughter an opportunity to study and come up well in life. Our career guidance programs helped her to understand different opportunities for a career according to her talents and abilities. She has taken up commerce stream in 11^th. She is planning to clear UPSC exams and work in a government firm. IDEA is wishing her all the best for a bright future.

When we see children like her, we feel content and happy that our efforts have been fruitful. This year the program sponsored a total of 255 children of which 158 were girls.
