Ashish: A success story

Instilling Hygine through Education : A success story of Ashish

Class: Remedial (Enrolled in 3^rd Grade OBE)

Program: Education on Wheels, Delhi

Ashish,10, a resident of Nalapar slum in Delhi with lives with his parents and 2 siblings. When the Education on Wheels (EOW) team visited the slum to meet with his parents for his enrolment into remedial class, their house inside the slum was found to be so unhygienic that it was hard to stay inside the house for more than a few minutes. Ashish was also full of dust and smell. It was hard for him to recall when he took his shower last. He was enrolled in remedial classes. Due to the poor state of hygiene of the house, Ashish was frequently found to be sick which resulted in his irregular attendance.

However as a regular follow up, parallel counseling was conducted with parents as well as with Ashish in order to bring positive results in their lifestyle. The EOW team also invited his parents to monthly Parents Teacher Meeting (PTM) so that they can also interact with get other families and receive their positive inputs. This had a positive impact on his parents changing their perspectives for keeping their home clean and their children tidy ensuring better health for everyone.

The efforts of the team did not go in vain and soon Ashish started coming to class in clean outfit. That was not the only change. He has become quite puctual in his attendance. On being asked about his aspiration, Ashish says, “after getting good education, I want to become a teacher so that I could teach other children like me in the slums”.

Kajri: A Success Story

Kajri had never been to school in her life. Living in the slum of Nalapar, Delhi, this 10 year old girl started picking garbage from nearby areas along with her mother. One day, she came to know about ‘Education on wheels’ (EOW) bus & got so much fascinated that she herself approached the EOW team to enquire about it.

The real story of transform began after her enrollment into the Remedial Session of the program. Due to lack of access to basic healthcare she often fell ill and was irregular in attending classes. Her unfriendly behavior toward her peers and frequent use of abusive language with fellow classmates were observed by the teacher & the project coordinator. She was provided regular counseling session which motivated her to be neat & clean and disciplined in her action. She started focussing on her homework.

Kajri was moved by an inspirational film based on a true story of a child who struggled in early life but aspired to be the president of India. After the movie screening when the teacher asked each & every student about their aspirations, Kajri expressed her dream of becoming a police officer. With her own efforts and the support from the EOW team, Kajri has now been selected for formal education as 5^th grader and preparing for open basic education (OBE) exams.

Total number of parents attended meeting – 266 (4 locations)

Number of Monthly Examinations – 8 (4 locations)

Extra –curricular activities- 02 (4 locations)

Number of Life skills sessions organized – 02 (2 locations)

Number of Home Visits/Follow ups – 128 (4 locations)

Number of children Registered in Open Basic Education (OBE) – 32

Number of children Mainstreamed with government school - 47

The program has been running with great level of cooperation & enthusiasm from parents, community members and stakeholders in the community. Mother’s day was celebrated with the children making beautiful cards for their mothers. 32 children were enrolled for open basic education and now preparing tfor examination. 47children and their parents were counseled by teacher and coordinator for regular school admissions. Theyy are now mainstreamed into nearby government schools. One corporate employee engagement activity was done with the children showcasing their talents.

Rabbina, the ambassador for change

Rabbina was only 12 years old when her family migrated to Delhi. As a young girl she always had dreamt of going to school. But living in a slum, it was not possible for her parents to enroll her in a school. She started working as a child labour and.got indulged in substance abuse. She also became very abusive in her behavior towards others. But things were to change. One day she came to know about Education on Wheels (EOW) program of Sukarya”.when she saw some children of her age going there. Out of curiousity, she rushed for admission into the remedial class of the EOW program and started attending classes regularly. It took a while but the ‘Life Skills' sessions on “Good Habits and Good Manners” brought in much needed change in her behavior and mannerism. Now she is not using abusive words anymore, has become respectful to others and encourages other children in the slums to come for classes evryday. She has become an ambassador for change.

During this quarter (January - April 2018) the EOW program got expanded into 2 more slum locations of Delhi [Tarachand colony & Arjun camp near Vasantkunj) by adding one more mobile unit. Now this project is running in 4 slums and 200 children are enrolled and receive daily basis classes under the non-formal education program. After many home visits & counseling sessions parents are now taking responsibilities to send their children regularly and on time. They are also showing their willingness to attend Parent teacher meeting. Children are showing great sense of competitiveness among themselves towards acquiring good attendance and scoring good marks in the examintion.
