Report XII: The Story of Ajji

By Debadutta Dash | Secretary, Sukarya USA

Story of Ajji

Ajji, a five year-old girl lives in the Tarachand colony slum of Delhi comes to Sukarya’s Education on Wheels (EOW) school regularly. Bubbly and always with a smile on her face, she is one of the extraordinary children among her peers and regularly attends the Non-Formal Education (NFE) classes. Being curious she always asks new questions and puts extra efforts to excell in her studies. She is driven by her aspiration to earn and look after her younger sister and family.

While children at her age spend their time playing, she has to take care of her younger sister beside doing all the household chores. At such a young age, she shoulders responsibility of the house because her mother works as a daily laborer and has to leave home for work every day of the week while her father is an alcoholic and now into drugs

One day while talking to her, she told me that that she feels girls are more responsible than boys. She admits that she likes and loveher sisters more than her brother. She thinks girls go out for work, earn money, and give that money to their parents, whereas boys only smoke, consume alcohol, and spend all their time wandering aimlesslyShe says boys get away with not doing any work because they are boys.

Ajji has many dreams-- she wants to study further and aspires to be a teacher. To fulfill her dream, Sukarya’s EOW School is playing a very important role. The EOW School allows girls like Ajji to pursue their dreams by receiving a quality non-formal education before mainstreaming to formal schooling. By educating girls, we give them a chance to be successful in their life to have a good future and to be a responsible citizen of tomorrow.
