A transformation on a Perfect 10 scale!

By Debadutta Dash | Secretary, Sukarya USA

Arjun, 13,  lives in Hoticamp slum community, in Delhi, with his uncle and aunt.

During one of  our field visits to Hoticamp, he was foun to be in a very dirty, unhygienic condition. The EOW teachers had an interaction with him. Initially he was looking indimidated and was unresponsive to us. After few frequent visits, he started mixing with teachers. Finally he was enrolled under EOW program. Later we came to know that he was ill treated by his uncle and aunt. Consequently he was depressive and wanted to run away from home. He got into the habit of begging in the temple in Rangpuri area. After induction at EOW he was gone through the repetitive counseling session by teachers about the importance of education and healthy lifestyle and the morals of life. Gradually his personality traits began to change, his appearance and behavior  improved tremendously. He has been punctual in boarding the EOW bus for study and did not go to beg at all. The special thing about him is that he cleared the Open Basic Examination recently to be mainstreamed in to the government school for his further studies. Today, there is always a smile on his face & he helps bringing other children from his slum community to enroll for the Non Formal Education (NFE).

In addition to routine classes, this quarter,  the project has mainly focused on mainstreaming of students into the formal government schools and it’s been a tremendous success on this front as 165 studentslike Arjun,  have been directly mainstreamed with government schools and another lot of 34 students are all set to appear for government’s Open Basic Examination [OBE] in February, 2020.

This is a remarkable achievement as almost 100 percent children (199 out of 200) have been mainstreamed and well directed towards their educational pursuit.  Amazing story of transformation on a PERFECT 10 scale. We look forward to a promising 2020!!
