Writing a new chapter of success for the New Year

INSPIRING TALE OF ILMA

This is the story of the illegal child marriage of a 13 years old teenage girl in Sapera Basti in Delhi. The unfortunate girl named Ilma relocated with her family last year from Bilaswi village in Uttar Pradesh for a better life. Ilma had been attending EOW classes of Sukarya. She had been a very attentive student and aspired to be a doctor growing up. Suddenly, Ilma stopped coming to class. EOW teachers started looking for her but couldn't initially trace her. One day a teacher at the Rangpuri Pahari slum EOW session noticed Ilma there. When she tried to call her, she ran away. The teacher followed her, reached a hut, and found Ilma there. She had been married off as a child bride in the same slum community where her cousin was getting married. When confronted, her parents, the daily wage earners Shamsher and Nagina, said they married her off to lower their household expenses.

Nevertheless, on the counseling of the EOW teachers, Ilma's supportive husband Akbar promised to send her to EOW School regularly and let her appear for the OBE examination. Ilma rejoined classes and is currently putting all her focus into preparation for the upcoming OBE examination. We as a society must remember Education, not marriage, is the key to a successful life for a child.

About Education on Wheels (EOW): As the name suggests, Education on wheels [EOW] is a well–equipped bus with computers, TV, First Aid, and other essential educational accessories and materials unique program where the school comes home. EOW The project's main aim is that the school comes virtually to the student's doorstep, making the learning process exciting, novel, and convenient.

Success story of Minsarin

Minsarin, 12, lives with her parents and two siblings in the slum pocket of Sector 52 in Gurugram. Her father works as a rag picker, and her mother as a domestic helper. Many years back, her family migrated from Bengal to Gurugram in search of lively hood. She used to go to the village school to study, but after migration, she had to leave the school.

After arriving in Gurugram, she was always looking for an opportunity to study but could not succeed. Besides being unaware of the importance of education, her parents didn't have any supporting documents necessary for her formal schooling. So, Minsarin always remained sad, which concerned her mother. Minsarin was always eager to find out ways to study. One day, she came across Raju, a boy in her neighborhood, carrying books for informal schooling at Education on Wheels. She asked him about his teaching and learned more about the program, which prompted her parents to approach the EoW team. Minsarin not only got enrolled in the EoW program but excelled in academics as well as in yoga and dance.

Minsarin gained much confidence to be a fast learner and self-dependent. Currently, she is studying in the EoW remedial class, and very soon, she will appear in the open basic examination (OBE) for the academic session 2022-2023. She considers her teachers her role model and aims to be a teacher. Minsarin's parents are thankful for Sukarya's Education on Wheels program and vouch for this program to be a blessing in disguise for urban slum kids.

Success Story of Sushma

Sushma, a 12 years old girl resides in the slum pocket of Rangpuri Pahari, Delhi with her father, a single parent. She was among the most regular and punctual students of the Education on Wheels program Sukarya. She had already cleared the Open Basic examination conducted by the government-run National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) for her formal schooling in the academic year of 2020-2021. But due to the pandemic, the process got delayed until Feb 2022 and she had to go through another set of extensive tasks to get admission to the government school.

The government school authorities are not client-friendly and they often ask for unnecessary documental proofs and procedures which generally put a marginalized segment of the population out of the scheme. She along with her father struggled hopelessly to even get heard by the school authority. Her father being an illiterate person could not provide proof of documents and domicile certificate. Frequent visits to the school authorities also made him lose his daily wage earnings causing financial hardships.

On learning about this situation, the Sukarya team immediately intervened and helped them to complete all the papers works and finally after a few meetings with school authorities Sushma got admission to the 7^th grade. After admission, Sushma was well determined to do good in her studies. She found her teachers as role models to her and she aspires to become a teacher in the future. She wants to serve the marginalized communities where she came from. Today, she emphatically gives her own example of education changing the lives of slum children.
