Dear Friends ,
Greetings and a big THANK YOU from IDEA !!!
IDEA study centers and sponsorship programs are for children from less privileged communities in Pune. In these communities, education is not given priority, so we often have to persuade parents to send the children to school. Even after admitting them in a school these children usually drop out. Many young children are taking the responsibilities of their younger siblings and so they are forced to stay back home. So just by giving academic support or financial support, we can’t ensure that the child will continue education. For this reason, we have decided to follow the holistic approach to education. In the holistic approach, the education mainly focuses on creating a positive mindset in children towards learning. Parents’ involvement is very important in this type of learning but in our field of work we cannot expect the parents’ to contribute much for the education of their children, We try to fill this gap through activities and programs which are specially designed to inspire and motivate children. We also take children out for exposure visits and study tours. We engage experts and volunteers from different fields to interact with children and share their knowledge with them.
As a part of the holistic approach, we have implemented a program called Bal Sabha or children’s club for children n IDEA study centers. It is meant for the empowerment of the children. Many schemes have been launched for the welfare of our children but in almost all the programs, the decision makers were always adults. In a bid to involve children in their own development process, the concept of 'Bal Panchayat' / Bal Sabha came up.
Bal Sabha is a model of children’s participation based on the concept of providing children a suitable democratic environment/platform to directly engage with adult duty bearers in order to elicit their attention and action on the issues which concern them.
The Bal Panchayat/ Bal Sabha is an ideal example of grassroots democracy and equity. Through creative projects, consultations and community programmes, children learn about their rights and responsibilities whilst acquiring knowledge, skills, behavior, and values of citizenship. This connects the children with each other, with adults, with their communities and also with policymakers under the guidance of Neighbourhood Community Network.
Thank you, dear donors, for helping us to implement such programs in our study centers for the overall development of children. All the students in these study centers belong to the slum area where they face a lot of psycho-socio-economic crisis and stress. Through these programs, we are trying to equip the children to cope up with such crisis, inculcate leadership qualities in them and make them the catalyst for social change. With your support, we will continue our work in these communities.
