Dear Friends,
We are delighted to let you know that Radio Meraj, the private radio station set up by Dr. Sakena Yacoobi, has won a national award from NAI – Supporting Open Media in Afghanistan (an Afghan NGO).
Radio Meraj, which has only been operational for one year, was recognized as being a top media outlet winning the Best Guest Speaker category for the whole country! 60 media outlets submitted applications and only 7 were given awards. Radio Meraj is one of the best news channels in Afghanistan and is recognized by the people of Herat as a valued conveyer of news and education.
Radio Meraj is important and gives rural poor Afghans a voice. The station produces and publishes many local reports and was recognized for enhancing those reports with the best reporters and subject experts in the areas of social action, education, politics, democracy, rule of law, and human rights. One of Radio Meraj’s goals is to educate the people of Herat so that they can learn how to improve their lives and have knowledge of events outside of their villages and cities.
Dr. Sakena Yacoobi said, during the opening ceremony for the station last year that, “This radio station is not political, but rather it works to improve morality, humanity and the characteristics and behavior of people. Moreover, it strives to work with Afghan youth in order to bring positive changes in their lives.” Dr. Yacoobi’s senior advisor, Mr. Bahra, followed up by saying, “Education is the first step for development, and media is the best tool for carrying out educational goals.”
Congratulations Radio Meraj and thank you for your continued support of this project.
