Thank you for continuing to support young people in our partner communities. We work to the principles of Asset-Based Community Development, building on the strengths of local networks and skills to create and sustain resources.
Agaria, our partner in Kumi District, is preparing to build the next four classrooms to complete the primary school. The foundations are made of traditional brick, but the village will manufacture thousands of ecobricks made from murram soil to preserve trees and reduce pollution. We know that it works because the partnership built the first stage in the same way.
Our Young Leaders programme continues to support the training of young people in social work, nursing and midwifery, public administration, and management. Graduates return to their community to increase the skills base and increase resilience and well-being.
A school needs to support itself, but solely relying on fees in an impoverished community is not a secure model. In Agaria, we are developing an innovative education fund, leveraging the value of rice, the community’s only cash crop. Currently, parents lose the majority of harvest value to middlemen because they lack an alternative method of sale and marketing. The new School Rice Fund will purchase rice directly from parents and collectively sell it to urban markets. Profit will provide a long-term source of sustainable income to improve education for the children of Agaria and strengthen family savings.
