Dear Khan Academy in Bulgarian friends,

here is our 3-month-update with some really wonderful news:

More and more children use Khan Academy in Bulgarian

The trend of about 23,000 users per month is steady! As we told you in our last report, November 2017 was record for us! This trend has been kept for the past 3 months too. This is growth of almost 200% compared to the same period at the end of 2016 and the beginning of 2017.

We are presenting Khan Academy to pupils of various Bulgarian schools

Our team has embarked on a journey through Bulgaria, thanks to our main partner America for Bulgaria Foundation. We visited schools in Haskovo, Kyustendil, Stara Zagora and Sveti Vlas. Many more are to come in March and April. We presented Khan Academy and spoke with many children and young people about the importance of learning new skills together with almost 60 million people around the world. Below are photos from one of the schools - Primary School Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii, Sveti Vlas. These children won our hearts with their curiosity, desire to learn and with many questions about computer programming and mathematics.

Khan Academy becomes part of an innovative school learning space

The above mentioned school in Sveti Vlas has recently refurbished its main hall. At the end of 2017  the inner design architects - Think Forward Studio - invited us to visit the renewed school hall and to congratulate personally all students and the school leadership for this special area for learning with Khan Academy.

Teacher training

At the end of 2017, 5 schools chose to work with us under the Ministry of Education ICT program and to let us train their teachers on how to introduce Khan Academy in class. So in February and March 2018, our team worked with schools in Burgas, Dimitrovgrad, Kyustendil, Nevestino and Razgrad. Using digital tools in class may seem easy for us, but many teachers need support and mentoring to turn their classrooms into digital. We are there to help them!

We plan to start providing also regular teacher trainings for introduction of Khan Academy in school, and to grant qualification credits for these trainings. Coming up soon.

New translations in Biology and Health and Medicine

We listed Biology and Health and Medicine content in Bulgarian on our local site, thanks to Tellus International Europe Community Board. Lessons include topics like what is biology, how cells work, how to protect  biodiversity and so on. Here you can see the new lessons. Enjoy!

State of the translation effort today

For the period since the beginning of our last report - and also thanks to your support:

So we advance in making Khan Academy accessible in Bulgarian with a good pace. However, there is much more content that can and should be available for Bulgarian students! And thousands of schools still remain out of direct reach. We still need your support. Donate an amount of your choice, devote your donation to a person you love or make it a gift, ask your colleagues or friends to start a monthly donation or just spread the word.

Dear friends,

With Christmas and New Year's Eve coming we will delight you with great news!

Record-breaking number of users

Last months marked a record number of users studying with Khan Academy in Bulgarian. In November 2017 we had more than 23K users at bg.khanacademy.org! This is a 215% increase compared with the same period in 2016. December shows a similar and stable upward trend.

Pilot application of Khan Academy in schools

The increased numbers are result of our hard work, also beyond translations, proofreading and dubbing of educational content. At the beginning of September we've trained 30 teachers with the financial support of Sofia Municipality’s Europe Program. We have also organized several events for school kids and for parents. So since the beginning of this school year, Khan Academy is being used by teachers and at least 500 children from 1st to 12th grade - only under this project! And we know about many more teachers piloting to work with Khan Academy in the whole country.

Vesko

Vesko is one of our pilot students from the 6th grade in 2nd School “Emiliyan Stanev” in Sofia. He shared that he is learning many new skills with Khan Academy: “I use KA for learning math, for decimals and fractions, circumference... Also I am programming with Javascript and draw animations. I like KA because it’s is fun!”

Watch also the video testimonials of our pilot teachers and students.

Our fans surprise us!

In the past months Studio Think Forward and Primary School "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" in Sveti Vlas have been working on transforming the biggest hall of the school “into space where students can study subjects that excite them and develop their talents”. And guess what? They’ve made a computer corner for self-initiated learning where Khan Academy is the main option. Isn’t this great!

High-level events

During the annual conference Education 2017 we held a special panel: “Digitalization of Education?”. We talked over the future of education with representatives from schools, universities, educational non-profits and authorities. Deputy Minister of Education, Mrs Denitsa Satcheva, took also part, shared important policy developments and promised to consider our recommendations for digitization of the education.

We have “chameleon-ized” bg.khanacademy.org! Hurray!

On November 15 we switched to a new content management system called Chameleon. The content of the Bulgarian website is now exclusively in Bulgarian. No more surprising texts in English. The Bulgarian team manages on its own the upload of new content, ensuring a stable and fully translated version of Khan Academy. Our team is 1 out of 8 in the world to pilot this novelty. This is a proof and acknowledgment of our hard work, not only over the Bulgarian version but also as an active member of the Khan Academy language community.

All content that is not translated yet is available on en.khanacademy.org

State of the translation effort today

Our team is growing. Thanks to the financial support from you, our main partner - the America for Bulgaria Foundation, and the Community Board of Tellus International Europe, we have started working with 7 more people who translate, proofread and dub educational content. What we did in the past 3 months (Sept, 17 - Dec, 15 2017)?

  • Translations: 600 videos and 263K words in Math and Biology
  • Proofread content: 500 videos and almost 650K words
  • Dubbed lessons: 330 videos for our youngest users

We advance in making Khan Academy accessible in Bulgarian with a good pace. However, there is much more content that can be available for Bulgarian students! And thousands of schools still remain out of direct reach. We still need your support. Donate an amount of your choice, devote your donation to a person you love or make it a gift, ask your colleagues or friends to start a monthly donation or just spread the word.

Have warm and fun-filled holidays!

Thank you!

Teachers exchange ideas on how to best use KA
Teachers exchange ideas on how to best use KA

Dear Learners and Do-Gooders,
Happy September 15th, the First Day of School in Bulgaria!

It’s been a hot summer, with our focus on working with teachers, adding several people more formally to our team, and dubbin videos. The 50% year-on-year usage growth of bg.khanacademy.org continues uninterrupted, despite the usual students’ summer vacations. In fact, we estimate that about 5% of school children in Bulgaria learn on the site, while we are now working on growing their engagement across time, including by using their registered accounts in classrooms around Bulgaria.

How are we sustaining this? Thanks to your donation personally, as well as to a couple major donors, who believed us after seeing the commitment of our many small donors.

Our learners often surprise us with the ways Khan Academy helps them succeed
Val is a young Bulgarian entrepreneur. He is the creative mind behind one of the first Escape rooms in Bulgaria. However, before achieving his dreams, Val had some difficulties at university. Macroeconomics was not his forte, until he stumbled on Khan Academy videos dedicated to Economics and Finance. And only those videos suddenly made his difficult exam seem doable. He truly values Khan Academy for how it enriches his life.

Parents get liberated when kids use good tools to study
Have you ever been inspired to become a “lazy mom”? A member of our team was recently interviewed by a blog about moms: she was extolling the virtues of giving more independence and ownership to her school-age son. In summary, if you teach your kid that good results are worth pursuing, give access to Khan Academy, and stop yourself from solving your kid’s homework, then his results in school will be consistently good, and your time will be free to do other things. And even more importantly, the kid will learn to deal with life’s little difficulties in his own way, including by using his allotted computer time wisely with KA.

What else we organized, where else we reached learners and educators - a brief summary
- We met KA implementation teams from a dozen other countries this month in Tbilisi, Georgia. We have learned much about working with schools, reviewed the latest translation tools, and even discussed new initiatives, like working with internet providers on increasing access to KA.
- As part of a project funded by the Sofia Municipality, we started a close partnership with 2 schools in Sofia: “SOU #2” and “French High School #9”. Our main goal is to learn about the barriers teachers face in letting technology lift kids’ achievement - stay tuned for more news there.
- We have focused on mapping KA’s content to the official Bulgarian teaching plans. Stay tuned for a clickable map on ObR.education later this year.

State of the translation effort today
Sevdalina and Irina have joined the translation effort, and we are close to the full Bulgarian translation. In fact, KA is now giving us tools to manage the Bulgarian content, which means only fully-translated material will be visible on our version. In the last 3 months we:

  • Focused on Biology, together with Math, our favorite subject
  • Translated 170 new video subtitles and 770 000 words from the Math exercises and teacher resources
  • Edited 390 subtitles and 380 000 words.

Still, much other Khan Academy content across higher Math, humanities and others is not yet available in Bulgarian. And thousands of schools remain out of direct reach. We still need your support. Donate an amount of your choice, devote your donation to a person you love or make it a gift, ask your colleagues or friends to start a monthly donation or just spread the word. For example, a couple of our friends posted on Facebook that for their birthdays they prefer donations to Khan Academy rather than personal gifts.

Our team at Sofia Science Festival 2017
Our team at Sofia Science Festival 2017

Dear Friends,

Last three months were really successful for Education Without Backpacks. After we invested much time and efforts in various negotiations and project applications in the last 1.5 years, in April and May 2017 we got approved for three new grants! They will build upon what we’ve accomplished through your help and will further our efforts to translate and implement Khan Academy in Bulgarian. Meanwhile, our usage continues growing 50% year on year.

But before we tell you more, here is a story we’d love to share with you:

Changing futures, one Khan Academy exercise at a time

As we track the interactions of thousands of learners with the Bulgarian Khan Academy, we try to meet as many of them as possible. Some stories inspire us and others exceed our wildest dreams! We will keep bringing those stories to you.

Mimi (not her real name) is a clever 14-year-old. Daniel from our team has been studying math with her remotely for 3 months and her dedication to the work has increased significantly in this period. She is intelligent and learns fast - when she decides to. She still skips Math class in school and still doesn't feel well adjusted to her environment. And that makes sense - she's been living in foster homes for years and that clearly affects her learning habits. But Mimi is stronger than her past and her confidence grows with each solved exercise.

Daniel about Mimi:

She also has a strong personality. For example, she would challenge me during each meeting: on whether I know interesting people; on whether math can make you rich; or on whether an exercise is "possible". It's hard to keep up with an intelligent girl like her, but so far: I've sent her a signed picture from a Bulgarian hip hop star; I've shared different career paths with her; and we've seen that everything can be learned with enough effort!”

But let’s focus on the job: learning math. Her results on Khan Academy: 15 unique days of solving exercises, 35 exercised skills, 537 minutes of studying, good progress with percentages, reading data, triangle areas, etc., and some struggles with measuring arcs and negative numbers ... 23 580 energy points.

We are sure Mimi has a bright future, as long as she keeps getting emotional support. As for math - after working with Khan Academy Daniel has no doubt that she gets it!

Below you can see a Khan Academy report about Mimi’s exercised skills: we’ve kept the report on Bulgarian, because that is the cause of our project!

Where else we reached learners and educators - a brief summary

Upon an invitation by the regional education governing authority, in March we took part in a training of 50 teachers from North-West Bulgaria - who are now aware of Khan Academy as a great tool for their work. We also presented Khan Academy at the Innovation in Education Forum in the city of Blagoevgrad. And we presented the platform at the exhibition accompanying the Education for Professions of the Future Forum in April 2017, attended by hundreds of Bulgarian teachers and educational experts.

Whole school classes, as well as individual learners and their parents, could talk with our team and try out Khan Academy in Bulgarian at the great annual Sofia Science Festival, where we participated on four consecutive days in May 2017.

With the beginning of the new school year in the autumn, we will start a pilot implementation of Khan Academy in two Sofia schools. This project will be funded by the Europe Program of Sofia Municipality. The mayor of Sofia personally handed us the agreement during an official ceremony, as our project was rated best among all project applications in our category.

State of the translation effort today

During the past 3 months we provided more translated content that is now available for all teachers and learners and for promotional initiatives like the above:

  • We translated more than 500 000 words of text lessons and exercises, and
  • edited more than 160 000 words of translated texts and 110 subtitled videos.

And other significant news: Since May 2017, for all remaining translations, editing and quality control of Math and Computing content (and for many connected activities) we can rely on the partnership and the generous financial support of the America for Bulgaria Foundation.

Furthermore, the Community Board of Telus International Europe will support us to translate video lessons in Biology.

Thank you!

Khan Academy Presentation in Ruse

Dear Friends,

The first months of 2017 brought a growing interest towards Khan Academy in Bulgarian! We are happy to report that your support for free, world-class education is reaching more and more Bulgarian kids, as well as their teachers and parents. While you invest in our efforts on translation and quality control of the educational resources, we also succeed in promoting it to its end users.

But before we get into our detailed activities, here is a story we’d love to share with you:

A pleasant surprise at Varna’s 7th Public School

In early March our executive director visited 7th Public School in Varna to present Khan Academy to teachers. But we didn’t know that our hosts had an interesting surprise for us: One of the math teachers and her students have a club for fun mathematics where they developed their own “virtual classroom”. Here is how the students devised interactive lessons: combining several digital technologies they created posters for specific math problems and connected them in a special mobile phone app to the relevant Khan Academy video lessons. Everyone in class just loved it! While we had already heard about this interesting invention on a Bulgarian National TV channel several weeks before, we now got a personal demo from the school principal and  a math teacher. We love to hear how students and teachers get inspired and expand Khan Academy in their own ways!

Stay tuned for the next report, when Daniel from our team will share the latest challenges and achievements of his new students.

What else we organized, where else we reached learners and educators - a brief summary

In January, we co-organized a teacher training with Sofia University. Then as a follow-up we were invited by the regional education governing authority to present Khan Academy to 70 teachers from North-West Bulgaria. We participated in two social events, in Ruse and in Sofia, where we presented Khan Academy to a broader, diverse audience. We were invited to talk about the platform as innovation for schools on a high-level policy event. We also co-created the strategy of the national coalition Education 2030: under its umbrella, state and local authorities, leading NGOs and the business sector join efforts to promote education as priority #1 for the Bulgarian society. Last, but not least, we received a special award from Sofia Municipality & Coca-Cola for our idea to engage high school students as volunteers in Khan Academy’s translation, to let them spread the word about the platform and even mentor our students.

State of the translation effort today

Thanks to your generous contributions, during the past 3 months we translated more than:

  • 260 000 words of text lessons and exercises,
  • 220 videos,
  • edited more than 380 000 words of translated texts and
  • started video editing.

We also renewed our efforts on dubbing already-translated videos.

And our reach is growing!

Since the beginning of the year:

  • the test version of Khan Academy in Bulgarian had 23 000 visitors (+ 41% YoY.),
  • the total number of browsed pages is 127 000 (+ 35%),
  • in 35 000 sessions (+ 45%)
  • Our YouTube channel with dubbed videos KhanAcademyBulgarian had 15 300 video views (+ 31%).

Thank you for making this possible!

Finally, as you know, we still have a lot to do so that more subjects are available in Bulgarian on Khan Academy. We still need your support to give equal educational opportunities to all kids in Bulgaria. Donate an amount of your choice, devote your donation to a person you love and make it a gift, ask your colleagues or friends to start a monthly donation or just spread the word. It all counts towards a better tomorrow.

Thank you!
