2024 Priorities
By Beatrice K | Project Coordinator
Your support towards the educational program in the six informal schools in Kenya enabled the neediest school children receive better and quality education. All the six schools recorded improved performances during 2023, this is due to a number of factors including volunteer teachers and mentors’ exemplary services in the schools. This project continues to positively impact on the education of over 300 needy students in Ruaraka.
During the year 2023, the project engaged a total of 12 volunteer teachers and mentors in the six partner schools. They provided teaching and mentorship services for students, and this helped improve academic standards of students. Teaching program took place every day from Monday to Friday for the three terms period and the mentorship program placed volunteer mentors once a week to hold sessions on different topics in the schools.
We are happy the project is a success as more children are becoming more literate. This meets our goal of educating slum kids to finish school with a high level of literacy.
For 2024 program, our assessment on reading materials in the schools revealed that the schools are ill-equipped with learning materials. Our call for support this year is therefore to help these six non-formal schools acquire reading and learning materials enough for over 400 students who are the direct beneficiaries of the project. We do appreciate your commitment and continued support to this project.

Changed lives in 2023
By Beatrice K | Project Officer
Education plays a pivotal role in the struggle against poverty This year we celebrate our volunteer teachers and mentors who worked tirelessly in the partner schools to improve the academic standards of students. We have witnessed improved performance by students who sat for the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education and going by the results posted by the various partner schools and individual students supported by the program, we are happy that our efforts are successful. We are truly changing and improving lives of individuals in Ruaraka community. In 2023, we conducted mentorship program in 6 schools, engaged 12 volunteer teachers to supplement the teachings and extracurricular activities in these schools and directly benefitted 92 students.
Our volunteers will continue to play influencing role in Ruaraka community to ensure that assignments and learning resources are given to the students we are supporting in our program. We will continue to directly provide free teaching assistance and support to underprivileged students through mentorship and organising extra-curricular activities.
We are convinced that when individuals have the chance to learn basic life and literacy skills, economies grow faster, and poverty rates decline. That is why Progressive Volunteers is working in all these projects to support needy students and help schools in economically and socially disadvantaged areas in Ruaraka.

Impact of new school curriculum on our program
By Beatrice K | Project Officer
We are convinced that education plays a key role in the struggle against poverty. When individuals have the chance to learn basic life and literacy skills, economies grow faster, and poverty rates decline. That is why our education programme aims to positively impact in the lives of students in Kenya.
With the funding received during the quarter, the organization recruited seven additional volunteer teachers and mentors to supplement teaching force in the following informal selected schools; Lucy Star Education Centre, Emmanuel Education Centre, Precious Star High School, Glorious Friends school, Mathare Little Star and Jambo Toto primary-Korogocho.
Progress is continually being made in the programme and we have witnessed improved performance by the individual students’ performances and we are happy that our efforts are successful. We are truly changing and improving lives of individuals in Ruaraka community. It is envisioned that more students from the 5 schools will benefit from the project and complete schooling with a high level of literacy and core skills, enabling them to succeed in life.
