The project continues to focus of the rural community of Shurugwi whose livelihoods were completely devastated by the onset of the ElNino induced drought in 2024 planting season. The community of peasant farmers relies mostly on rain fed agriculture for their livelihoods. The crops were completely scotched by the extreme heat and shortage of water. Over 500 households are without food.

In the meantime the need for food relief continues and the women and children remain disproportionately disadvantaged. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers need food assistance the most. There are increased risks of malnutrition, illness and even death. Some of the children miss school increasing the number of absenteeism. We tried to identify these as priority recipients as more donations are yet to come through. The need continues to remain dire. The food relief will make tangible difference in the lives of mothers and children in supporting their livelihoods.
Out of the $217 received so far, food items were bought and packed into $40 hampers and distributed among 5 households. Unfortunately this was a very small fraction and the appeal continues.
We are very grateful to our donors and wish that they continue to support the food relief efforts.
