FORMACION A DOCENTES
FORMACION A DOCENTES

Over the past few months, Fundown Caribe has continued working to ensure that people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities can exercise their rights and participate fully in their communities. Thanks to the support we’ve received through GlobalGiving, we’ve been able to strengthen our efforts in inclusive education, family support, and social awareness. Our work aims to bring about concrete changes in the environments where people live, study, and participate, because we know that the barriers they face do not lie within the individuals themselves, but rather in the attitudes, practices, and opportunities they encounter around them.

One of the achievements during this period has been the capacity-building of more than 400 teachers from 20 educational institutions in the District of Barranquilla through training programs and practical tools to promote more inclusive classrooms. We have also supported more than 170 families who have encountered barriers to accessing fundamental rights—particularly in education and health—by providing guidance and, when necessary, coordinating their cases with public institutions. At the same time, we continue to organize monthly meetings with family leaders to discuss rights, autonomy, participation, and other issues that are part of the lives of people with disabilities.

Behind each of these actions are specific stories. One of the families we support came to us seeking guidance because their son was having trouble securing a spot in school. Through Fundown Caribe’s support and coordination with institutional partners, the family was able to learn about the available options and make progress in finding a solution. For us, this kind of support represents much more than resolving a specific situation: it means that a family understands its rights, finds support to defend them, and can continue to build opportunities for their child’s future.

During this period, we continued working to ensure that these opportunities reach more people. Every teacher who adopts new tools, every family that learns about and exercises its rights, and every space where stereotypes are challenged contributes to building a society in which people with Down syndrome are recognized for who they are and can participate on equal terms.
