Near and Easy Access to Safe Drinking Water - Increased Time to Earn More
I am Fatima Ali of 39 years wife of Sher Muhammad having 7 children living in a very remote village of district Mirpurkhas. My village is some 47 kilometers away from main city, the village consists on more than 37 households but it’s too marginalized village that we can say it zero basic amenities in the village i.e. no metaled road, no electricity, no hospital, no gas, no school for children and no safe drinking water. Like rest of rural areas, the village women and girls are responsible to fetch drinking water and bring fuel wood for daily use of household. In our case, due to brackish water of village ground, we have to fetch drinking water from the water course (an open source of agriculture water) which is one and half kilometer away from the village. In bringing the drinking water we use to spend at least 50 minutes for one round but almost all the households needs at least two times. It’s just one aspect of but socially we never go alone nor young girls even they may be a group but they have to accompany an elder women. And the water course water could not be called a safe water or drinkable water but the villager were using because there was no alternate before the installation of hand pump by Advocacy, Research, Training and Services (ARTS) Foundation through genius and worthy donors support under GlobalGiving.
The installation of hand pump through the extension lead around 1500 feet from the village (the extension lead is used to bring sweet and drinkable water from the ground source as it could be found usually near to water courses, minors or canals) which made easy life of women and girls in the village. The hand pump does not provides safe water but it saved time of women and girls specially for me as I am working as a tailor (dress making) at my house. The easy and near access saved my two hours and I am using these two hours to make more suits for ladies and girls – just one suits give me Rs.300 earning which takes almost 2 to 3 hours. I am happy that installation of hand pump in my village saved my at least 2 hours directly and more than 3 hours indirectly.
