Donating for Water - Giving Life to Humanity

In the first week of the March 2020, ARTS Foundation installed 5 hand pumps in Jhando Khan Laghari, Fateh Muhammad Panhwar and Jani Kapri, Mirprukhas. At all five locations there was a need to stretch canal pipes from nearby areas because of the lack of underground drinking water availability.

In these villages there was a serious issue regarding the availability of drinking water. The habitats in these regions had several diseases caused by the pollution of ponds and streams. This meant that the water that was available to drink was also polluted. The population of this area were also struggling with financial burdens of purchasing water, as well as the physical burden of fetching drinking water from distant areas. 

A total of 1013 families will benefit from the installation of these wells. The benefits are numerous, including increased leisure time for women and girls, improved health due to higher cleanliness and food hygiene and financial benefits due to there being no need to purchase water. 

In these villages have many under-privileged people belonging to religious minority as tenants who were living without the basic human right of water. They could not afford to install pumps themselves to access drinking water and therefore these village communities were helped by ARTS Foundation.

Shanti Bai, due to lack of clean water, we were forced to drink contaminated water from a small toba (pond) where rain water was collected and it was the only existing water source in this area. ARTS Foundation team came in our area and provided us the facility of community hand pump so we are very thankful to the ARTS Foundation and GlobalGiving for this. Now the lives of our children are safe. We are thankful to the Philanthropist’s for hand pumps as there was serious shortage of clean drinking water. We were bound to drink polluted water from a nearby small pond which was only source of water in our area. I worried about my young children as they were getting ill due the use of contaminated water of pond. Access to clean water through newly installed hand pump prevented deadly water-borne diseases in our area and I feel highly satisfied regarding my children’s health and for this I am very grateful to ARTS Foundation, GlobalGiving and Philanthropists living around the world, says Jamna, another inhabitant of the area.

As per the Constitution of Pakistan and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, of which Pakistan is a signatory, water is recognized as a basic human right and the state is under obligation to provide safe drinking water to every citizen. Despite this, a large majority of our country’s population is deprived of this basic right. Pakistan is among the top 10 countries of the world with a major chunk of population living without access to safe water. 

Mirpurkhas is among the most water-stressed district of Pakistan. This district also rank in the low human development index in Pakistan. The majority of the population of this district depends on farming, livestock, but due to extreme water shortage, since the last couple of years has badly affected made their lives. As a result, people are compelled to buy drinking water from the market and bring water for domestic use from far flung areas.

The only affordable solution to end drinking water shortage is to install water hand pumps and fetch the fresh water from the ground. The main advantage of hand pumps is that they are one of the most economical and simple solutions for providing a collective supply of drinking water in rural areas and suburban environments. They also help to eliminate the risks of people, and children in particular, falling into open wells.

They can be installed anywhere where the ground water is fresh. Community use it mostly for drinking and cooking purpose. Hand pumps are manually operated pumps; they use human power and mechanical advantage to move fluids or air from one place to another.

Here in Mirpurkhas installation of hand pump cost ranges from 150$-300$ depending on the depth of the fresh water availability in the ground. This included the cost of the hand pump, the pipes and other material, labor and transport. These pumps are installed within 2 to 4 months after the donation is received, dependent on our surveyors who access the location and feasibility of every location before commencement. Approximately 300+ beneficiaries can have water from these pumps in a day.
