Report Detailing Malaria Prevention Using Drama

By Stephen Waddell | Founder and Executive Director

Malaria

Uganda has one of the highest rates of Malaria in the world and accounts for 4% of global malaria cases. Statistics by WHO reveal that Uganda experienced 13 million cases of malaria in 2021 which led to 19,663 deaths.

Malaria has been shown to have a negative impact on health, education and even the economy. Malaria’s impact on education was confirmed by a study by the Ministry of Health which revealed malaria-related absenteeism can account for up to 50% of all school absenteeism. Malaria was calculated to cost the Ugandan economy over $1.3 billion in 2020.

Like many other diseases, malaria does not impact everyone equally. Malaria has been shown to disproportionately impact vulnerable groups of people such as pregnant women and children under 5.

PLATFORM for the NEEDY (PLANE) has been onfrontline to control and prevent the high malaria prevalence among the population. Although the Miniistry of Health in Ugganda with her partners distributed millions of treated mosquito nets , the people are ignorant about the proper mosquito nets utilization. Majority have kept them while oters use them in their gardens. This has contributed high malaria prevalence among the people impacting negatively to the pregnant mothers, children and elderly.

To control and prevent such , PLANE has been creating awareness sensitizing and educating the people in communities and children in schools using the Drama approach becuase it pulls massess, entertains and educates the people.

In the annual report 2019 attached has details of the report about malaria prevention and control that was carried out using drama in the three districts of Kabarole, Bunyangabu and Fort Portal city.

Your generous support to this project will help in the reduction of malaria in the 7 districts of Rwenzori region ( Kabarole district,Bunyangabu, Fort Portal Tourism City,Kyenjojo,Kyegegwa, Kamwenge, Ntoroko district ) that have malaria prevalence.
