Uganda has one of the highest rates of Malaria in the world and accounts for 4% of global malaria cases. Statistics by WHO reveal that Uganda experienced 13 million cases of malaria in 2021 which led to 19,663 deaths. Malaria has negative impact on health, education and even the economy. Malaria's impact on education was confirmed by a study by the Ministry of Health indicating malaria-related absenteeism accounts for up to 50% of all school absenteeism. Malaria impact on pregnant women&children
Malaria creates a heavy burden on the health system, with Malaria accounting for approximately 30%-50% of outpatient care. With support from her partners, the Ministry of Health has distributed millions of treated mosquito nets to each household, but Malaria cases remain high because of ignorance and poor utilization of the nets. Most people have resorted to using them for fishing, chicken farming, covering crops from being destroyed by chicken, and keeping them in their bags and suitcases.
There is a need to create intensive awareness on the proper utilization of Malaria treated mosquitoes that the Health Ministry recently distributed to help reduce the burden of Malaria in the region. Funds collected will be used to purchase a van for the drama members' transportation, purchase a public address system, buy radio airtime to run radio drama episodes, talkshows and facilitate drama members and health workers during live performances in schools communities.
We are optumisitic that this approach of intensively using drama on radio, talkshows and drama life performance in over 140 schools and 98 communities demonstrating the proper utilization of the treated mosquito nets will equip the people and children with the information on proper mosquito usage hence midset change. This will reduce the maternal and infant mortality rates , lead to clean sanitation free from mosquito breeding and people will learn to rush to health facilities for check up .
