In western Uganda, many young mothers struggle with poverty caused by child marriage, teenage pregnancy, and leaving school early. EmpowerHer Farms aims to help young mothers learn to farm and provides startup resources, including goats, cows, chicks, feed, and supplies. A new community produce garden would boost nutrition and income through a farm-to-table circular system in which manure enriches crops, and garden waste helps to feed the animals, providing independence for generations to come.
Nearly 70% of girls here do not finish primary school, and 64% of teenage mothers are unable to return to class. With little education and few job opportunities, young mothers have a hard time feeding their children and earning a living. Many face exploitation and violence. Adolescent girls also lack safe places and practical skills, which puts them at risk of repeating this cycle and makes it hard for them to build stable, independent lives.
PLANE Uganda offers hands-on training to help young mothers improve their nutrition, earn money, and build stable futures by learning skills such as goat rearing, zero-grazing dairy, poultry farming, and basic farm management. A community garden improves nutrition and income by using a closed-loop system: manure helps crops grow, and garden waste feeds the animals. The garden also provides a safe place for support and healing.
This project will change the lives of 60 young mothers by helping them earn a steady income, improve their families' nutrition, and keep their children in school. The garden increases food security and provides income year-round. The project helps prevent early marriage, teaches valuable skills, and builds strong support networks. As these mothers grow their farms, they become role models who show that girls can overcome challenges and build independent, dignified lives.
