Vardah Closure Report

After Vardah devouring the city and its outskirts mercilessly the city took month to recover. Most of the schools in Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur district being impacted  by power shutdowns for a couple of weeks. Schools which were in outskirts of the city faced the wrath of the cyclone.

 As part of Vardha Cyclone Disaster relief, the Foundation supported most of the effected schools and the students, to cope up with the scenario by lending a helping hand. The Foundation continued the distribution of uniforms, school bags, stationery’s like notebooks, pen, pencil, erasers, etc for the students. Along with that, the schools were provided with basic electrical repair works, plumbing works replacing old battery’s with new ones for laptops, changing damaged wires, computer servicing and so on. The Foundation not only provided the required materials but the resource persons ensured that the materials are reaching the needy. The schools appreciated the foundation for their hearty contributions and also for helping them in the hour of need.

We are very happy to say that, with the overwhelming donations received, we were able to reach the materials to quite a large number of students. The Foundation as a part feeling honored and had fulfilled the requirements of the schools and the students with the help of the donations by you all. Thank you.

Activities Carried-Out During Last Quarter :

It came, it shook, it destroyed. The site of the city was uprooted trees, big broken branches blocking the roads, fallen name boards, hoardings, damaged compound walls and vehicles under fallen trees, power cut and lack of milk supplies, a day after severe cyclone Vardah ripped through the city. The power supply was not restored in most of the schools for almost 2-3 weeks. It’s been a couple of months since Vardah had devoured Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur District.

Schools which were in outskirts of the city faced the wrath of the cyclone. As part of the initiative, the foundation had helped the school management and the students to cope up with the scenario by lending a helping hand. The foundation had distributed stationery’s like note books, pencils, erasers, rulers, pens, sketches, crayons, water colours, uniforms, school bags, geometry boxes, etc. for the students.

Foundation also carried out basic electrical repair works in many schools by providing bulbs, electrical fittings etc to the needy schools. Technical repair work likes replacing old batteries with new ones for laptops, changing damaged wires, computer servicing and so on were also carried forwarded in many schools.

Electrical wiring and plumbing works for drinking water in schools was also done in the many schools. The team deployed dedicatedly carried out the repair works within the timeline. The schools were thankful for the support on quick recovery.

The support to the victims continued by the Foundation.

School buildings were repaired, painted and electrified. City schools affected by the floods were done with minor repair works and painted by the team of volunteers. The student, teachers and the school authorities were glad to get back their classrooms even more vibrant than earlier. Some of the classrooms were also done with minor electrification works, fixing up lights etc.

Some schools were provided with R.O water plants so as to provide purified drinking water.

Most affected school libraries were covered up in the donations and surveyed on the requirements by the team from the Foundation. The books were procured based on the requirements from the schools and it includes book on Science & Fiction, moral stories & toons, dictionaries, fun with math, general knowledge, about Indian leaders, scientists etc.

The school’s sports department was also in the focus and the requirement list was analyzed and suggested materials were procured and handed over to the sports department authorities of the school. The sports kit contained in-door and out-door sports equipments like Carrom Board, Chessboard, rings, skipping ropes, throw balls, volley balls, Badminton rackets, nets, etc.

Activiites Taken-up During Last Quarter 

Continuing the campaign of Chennai flood relief, during the last quarter the foundation focused on devising permanent solutions to the damage created by the floods.

To began with the foundation resolved the electrical issues and installed the basic requirements like Fans, Lights in the classrooms. Due to the heavy rain fall and seepage the classrooms walls were damaged and   paint was removed from their surface.

 The foundation repaired those walls and with the help of volunteers and professional painters all the classrooms were painted with good quality paint. Now the classrooms look more vibrant and colorful and able to provide comfortable atmosphere for the students in the classrooms.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The desktop computers which were impacted due to the floods were repaired during previous quarter. Now the computer lab is functional and daily is providing digital literacy access to 1300+ students.

Activities Taken-up during Last Quarter

The Foundation participated actively in flood relief activities during and post floods at Chennai and Kanchipuram districts. 

During last quarter the foundation , the foundation focused on providing permanent solution to the damage occurred due to flood. The Foundation  continued the survey  in various areas  and  collected  the  list  of  requirements,  meeting  with different school authorities neighborhood etc. The study revealed the basic requirement lists & the same was procured and distributed to the victim families and schools in the flood affected areas.

Schools were provided with the required furniture’s like 100 numbers Dual desks for students, chairs for teachers, almirahs and cupboards through the donations. The student families were also donated with house hold utensils, stationeries, school bags and uniforms.

Foundation also procured some electrical fittings like fans, tube lights for the schools and handed over to school. The damaged classroom walls due to seepage were taken up for repair and painted in some schools. The Foundations focus on the schools were appreciated and welcomed by the students and school authorities as it was much more than their basic amenities. 

As a next step the Foundation is focusing on constructing boundary walls, some more repair works inside the school premises.
