Dear Friends,

The inaugural cycling program at the Mariposa Center for Girls was a great success this year! The project was an opportunity for growth, empowerment, and leadership for the Mariposa girls. Though we met a few challenges, it was a rich experience for the girls, staff, and volunteers, which we hope to continue for years to come.

After receiving the generous donation of 60 bicycles in February, we built a storage center for the bikes with the help of student group volunteers from Lawrence Academy and Education First. Right away, we began planning for our cycling and bike mechanics program, which we kicked off this June. Through this program, the Mariposa girls learned to repair a bicycle themselves, as well as safely ride and explore their town as a cyclist.

During June and July, Mariposa girls ages 12-15 had cycling class four days a week. In this time, we saw many girls face their fears of learning to ride. Even after falling, they were determined to keep going. Some also found it challenging to engage in so much physical activity, but after the first week, they started feeling much stronger and certain of themselves during their biking sessions. The rewards of exploring and the excitement of feeling free were worth all the hard work!

Starting at the beginning of October, we entered the rainy season. Because the bike paths will be too wet to utilize for the coming months, we will take a break from the program until the dryer months.

We also found that as a small organization with a limited staff, we will need more support in the form of personnel to continue this program. We hope to secure funds for more cycling guides in the future so that the program is sustainable.

Our cyclists our anxious to be out on the road again with the breeze in their hair! We’ll be working hard on our end to secure more support for this program so that we can continue again with same enthusiasm next summer!

Thank you all for your support, every step of the way. Without your support, this successful summer session would not have been possible! To continue to support Mariposa programs, please donate here: globalgiving.org/projects/unleash-the-leader-in-a-girl/

Dear Friends,

This summer our inaugural cycling program was an amazing learning experience, both for our girls and for the Mariposa team. The Mariposa girls ages 12-15 had cycling class four days a week in June and July, and the transformation during those two short months was truly incredible.

For some girls, like Detany (age 12), the cycling program represented a great physical and mental challenge. Many of our girls had never learned how to ride a bike or are not used to exercising, so going on bike rides in the summer heat represented a big physical challenge. Detany and others had to overcome their fear of falling and learn to believe in themselves and their abilities. Despite these challenges, by the end of the summer every single girl in the program learned how to ride a bike!

For other girls, like Viviana (age 15), the cycling program represented an opportunity to shine. Some girls that had a tendency not to want to participate in any activity or that frequently had negative attitudes suddenly shone as the leaders in their groups, motivated by their love of bike riding to become a positive example for the other girls.

This summer the Mariposa girls not only learned how to ride bikes, but also learned basic bike maintenance and safety skills. They engaged in fun exercise while getting to explore parts of their community they would not have seen otherwise, and had the opportunity to develop leadership and teamwork skills through this sport.

We could not have had such a successful summer cycling program without the help of amazing volunteers like Myia, Elena, Emily, and assistants from Iguana Mama. Our flexible staff members Mary Jane and Rose Lourdes normally teach literacy and bike ride as a hobby, but this summer adapted to their role as cycling instructors with ease. And of course, we are extremely grateful for your support, which helped make this project possible! Thank you all for an amazing summer cycling program!

Creating a strong foundation for the building
Creating a strong foundation for the building

Dear Friends,

In February we received an incredibly generous donation of 60 brand new bicycles! With these bicycles we will be able to start the Mariposa Cycling program this summer, teaching our girls bike mechanics and how to safely ride around town.

When we first received the bicycles we did not have adequate storage space for so many of them, and had to temporarily fill different classrooms. Thanks to your support of infrastructure projects at the Mariposa Center for Girls, we were able to build a bike storage building on our property!

Student groups from Lawrence Academy and Education First worked together with local construction workers to build a durable and secure storage facility that is large enough to hold all of the bicycles. Local cycling experts designed the building for proper bike storage and easy access for the Mariposa girls. Now we can rest easy knowing that our bicycles have their own building so they stay safe and in good working order.

Bicycles provide girls with independence, a fantastic form of exercise, and the ability to explore new areas of their community. Falande, age 12, starts every day by asking “When can I ride a bike?” and the other girls share her eagerness to start the new program. It is rare for a girl to have her own bicycle in our community, so we are excited to be able to provide the Mariposa girls with this cycling experience.

We couldn’t have done this without your support, so thank you!

With gratitude,
