Greetings from IDEA!!

Festivals are in the air in India . We have many festivals in the months of October , November and December . Schools and colleges have long holidays for ‘ Diwali ‘ and its a right time for IDEA to organise co-curricular activities for our students . Many companies too approach us for celebrating these festivals with poor & needy children . They invite them to their company ; give them exposure ; share their joy with them .

Visit to CMC Academy

As part of our efforts to bring underprivileged children in the virtual world, about 13 children from IDEA beneficiaries got an opportunity to visit CMC Academy and learn basics of computer software and hardware. CMC is a Tata Enterprise and a subsidiary of TCS focussing on Education and Training. It focuses on providing advanced skills for employment in IT, Finance and Accounts, Design & Creative, Office Management and several other areas.

Children were excited to get to sit in a glossy training room and learn computer basics. Employees of CMC also taught bookmarks and paper caps making which was an additional bite in their enthusiasm.

Vinaya knows where she wants to go!

Vinaya is 16 years old girl studying in 11^thcommerce stream in a college in Bhor one of our project locations. She lives with her parents and younger brother in a small village . They do not have a house of their own. They live in a small shelter provided by their relative. Vinaya’s father works as a tailor. He has a small tailoring shop where he stitches men’s clothes. Her mother works as a labourer in someone else’s farm. Both of them work hard to meet family’s requirements.

Vinaya’s parents are aware of the importance of education and are willing to support their daughter to complete her graduation. But sometimes they have to struggle hard on finances to meet both ends.

We conduct student mobilization sessions in the village community under skill development program. During one such session, we met Vinaya and gave information about computer literacy class. Very soon she joined the basic computer class run by IDEA foundation.

Vinaya knows the importance of computer learning but due to poor economic condition of the family she could not join any computer course earlier. Today she is one of the regular and sincere students of computer class. Within two months of learning computer, she is able to understand basic concepts of computer such as MS word, Excel and Power point.

Now her ambition is rejuvenated. She is exploring ways to learn more of computer such as tally because her aim is to focus on banking exam and work in a banking sector after getting through the exam.

From far away to click away!

Dear friends,

It gives us immense pleasure to share that 3 batches of computer literacy program are over. 35 young girls in our rural project are entering the cyber world by learning computers.

Capacity building through computer

We imparted training for three different target groups.

Students from High School (senior schools): Here our focus was to introduce computer basics including MS word, excel, power point, internet browsing etc. to them and how they can get additional information on their lessons in school from internet. 17 girl students have taken benefit of these sessions.
Young college going students. The sessions included MS word, excel, power point, internet browsing along with how they can register on job portals, preparing an impressive CV etc. 15 young girls attended these sessions .
Students undergoing vocational training (Basic Nursing). As a value added service for employability enhancement, we have introduced lessons for young girls who are undergoing Basic Nursing course with us. Computer knowledge will help them handle responsibilities of maintaining record on patients, fixing appointment, handling case papers etc in clinics and small hospitals.

Initial amusement and the fear of ‘Touching a computer’ got over soon and within no time they were capable of operating it. Computer literacy will help them be update, modern and alert. They are confident enough to find a job on online portals. They will be better equipped to stand on their own feet.

Case study of Asma:

Asma (name changed) lives in a village with her mother and younger brother and sister. Her father works on a petrol pump (gas station) in Pune and sends money home every month. However that does not meet the family requirements. Asma’s family owns a small farm but they do not get any income out of it. Her mother works as a labor on her neighbor’s farm. Asma did not study after 10^th. She has been helping her mother in the household work.

Asma recently completed a nursing course through IDEA. She also completed computer literacy program to gain additional skills required in modern world. Being equipped with computer literacy, she is looking forward to get a better job. She says, learning computer improved her English as well. Her joy is doubled!

Right now we are using 3 computers for this program but slowly with your support we will have a flourishing computer training centre for many more girls. 3 tribal girls have recently joined a new batch and they travel 5 kilometers to learn basics. We are so proud to reach out to them.

Please continue your blessings to our new batches as well. We still have a long way to go as this is a new initiative. Our rural girls live really far away. Let’s bring them CLICK away!!!

Greetings from IDEA !

We are happy to present a report on the recently started project to impart computer literacy to rural girls. Some young girls approached us and shown interest to learn basic computer literacy class along with English Language skills . In this rural area, there were no computer classes in many villages . The students had to travel 20 to 30 KM to join a computer class . Computer literacy is very important in every once life. Considering the need and interest we have started classes in our project office. A few High Schools in the area also requested us to start computer class for the students.

We started two batches – one for the undergraduate students and another one for the school going kids .

The class for the young girls were mainly focused on MS word, excel, power point, internet browsing etc in addition to English Language skills . Total 20 young girls attended this class. By the end of three months the girls developed very good skills especially in MS word. They were very happy to ‘create their CV ‘ by themselves . Earlier they were submitting ‘ hand- written’ application forms . The girls were oriented about the ‘ job recruitment portals ‘ and Social networking sites as well .They were amazed by the ‘power of net search ‘ to find out any required information. The girls were so happy that their teacher was also one among them . Their senior in their school !! So learning was a ' fun time' for these girls .

In the separate batch for the school kids ,our focus was to make them aware of the ‘ computer basics ‘ & ‘net search’ for additional information related to their school topics . These kids were operating a computer for the first time.
