Our School Organic Garden Program has been incorporated in to research in the past three month. In collaboration with Colombia University, A Growing Culture and KEA Green Hill Education Center, Kikandwa Environmental Association (KEA) aims to establish many organic gardens that will encourage students and teachers to learn modern farming methods. They are taught new skills that will enable them to farm the land in a productive and sustainable way. These skills are then passed onto their families, therefore transforming the previous farming lifestyle of mere subsistence farming.
KEA Green Hill Education Center (GHEC) school garden project was basically established with its major objective of changing our communities to promote healthy eating and active living, through on-hand farm gardening, providing lessons on basic health and giving knowledge on proper balanced deity, increase farm productivity, reduce food deficiency, promote school lunch programs in partnership with Kikandwa Environmental Association (KEA), an organization which promote food security. Consequently addressing the challenges caused by malnutrition and poverty in the community.

January 2017, a delegate from Climate Based Adaptation visited the school, to share knowledge and learn from children on how to mitigate and adapt to climate change as new unique program added to our school garden program. All delegates spent, an amazing day creating wonderful new friendships and being involved in a wide variety of activities. The school children learnt and participated in further discussion and training in up to date organic farming methods and the students will then become 'change agents' as they pass on these newly gained skills to their respective parents and homes everyone was told of the importance of having the whole community involved in the school gardening project.
Since the establishment of the school garden the school and community have continued to learn about a variety of modern organic farming techniques. Students and teachers have participated in a number of training that have been held at our and these new skills continue to show great rewards in their school garden by donating organic seed from USA to the school, and community.
Since establishing the school garden not only the children from KEA, but also surrounding community have been taught many skills including soil preparation, double dug farming methods and seed cultivation. They are all learning new skills that will improve their ability to be able to farm the land in a sustainable and productive way. Plantations of vegetables, creels and trees that have been planted are all doing very well. In addition to this the children no longer have to walk for kilometres to get to a water source and can enjoy a drink throughout their long day at school.
The students and teachers have learnt many new skills and as testament to their commitment and hard work a variety of vegetables continue to flourish in their school garden.
