By Ruth Konchellah | Director of Cherish Others Organization Kenya
Since our last quarterly report, Cherish Others Organization Kenya has focused on convincing mid-wives to abandon the practice of circumcision, and on providing an alternative source of income for female circumcisers.
Cherish Others Director Ruth Konchellah has been working to develop close relationships with women in the community who actually do the cutting to circumcise girls. This includes mid-wives. Mid-wives are particularly needed in their communities due to the lack of available medical care. When women give birth, if they have not already been circumcised, mid-wives often circumcise those women, regardless of their age. Ruth is educating mid-wives about how harmful this practice is, and has convinced some not to carry out the procedure.
In addition, Ruth has been working to convince traditional women circumcisers to abandon this practice. This affects their source of income, since they are paid to carry out the circumcisions. Therefore, Cherish Others has purchased several cattle so that they can have an alternative means of income by selling the milk. Cattle are an important staple of the Maasai community. This reports a photo of Ruth negotiating for the cattle in this male-dominated society!
