Project Update

By Peter Kojo Amoabil | Project Leader

Introduction

In many parts of the world, rural literacy is still a big issue. Children from rural areas accessing educational resources involves several approaches that are innovative. This report explains efforts made by our organization in promoting rural literacy in this current year.

Donating Physical Books

One of the major strategies we have been using is giving out hard-copy reading materials to regional libraries. By far, 500 books have been donated making it successful till now. This has been seen through massive participation from the public showing an increase in literacy rates. However, by  this year over  700 kids had taken loaned out books as an indication that there was still hope for enhancing their reading habits in order to elevate the level of literacy in future.

Digital Book Access through Moodlebox Project

We used also technolongy platform together with other things to take e-books to hinterlands besides physical volumes. Moodlebox was the main tool enabling us to do that. We managed to download some from Africanstory which is free site offering variety of digital stories. We have therefore come up with a lot of them by just merging into our gadgets or Moodlebox devices and tablets that we donated for Kanvilli Nuriya Primary School.

Offline Access to Educational Resources

One of the major advantages of the Moodlebox project is that it enables access to digital books even when there is no internet connection. Especially in rural areas, where there may be inadequate internet coverage or none at all, this is very vital. So today students at Kanvilli Nuriya Primary School have got various digital book collections on Moodlebox devices and tablets which will definitely help them in enhancing reading culture as well as improving learning process.

Conclusion

Donating physical books along with initiating Moodlebox project has greatly improved rural literacy in some parts of the world. The success of our initiatives is shown by over 700 children who borrowed books from libraries and increased access to digital books at Kanvilli Nuriya Primary School. We will continue looking for innovative ways through which we can help people living in villages who cannot read anything but are of school-going age get basic literacy. This is a commitment that we do not plan to change. We are looking forward to continue working on this field of interest which is so important for us.

Future Directions

Expanding the Book Donations: we aim at increasing the number of books donated to libraries in even more remote parts.

Boosting Digital Libraries: we intend to improve our electronic book collection and cover more schools with Moodlebox project.

Community Engagement: We will work with local communities so that they can develop reading culture as well as support literacy programs.

Combination of traditional and digital resources is making things easier regarding literacy improvement especially in the countryside. These are projects that we will remain faithful in undertaking and as such shall be able to transform the lives of many innocent kids from these areas.
